It is not cancer but is idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a severe respiratory illness that can make breathing very difficult. I met him about 3 years ago at an interval in a concert, we got chatting and ended up telling each other about his IPF and my MS - quite surreal and a lovely man
Lovely guy. I've followed his career since the 60's. He did have cancer but fought back and beat it, but this IPF is one step to far for him now. A great loss to the radio airwaves. Enjoy your well deserved retirement Mr Walker, and thanks for the music x
A really good DJ (Radio 2 has been losing a few in recent times and will lose more sooner rather than later, naturally enough, given their age profile and mortality).
Mind you, Radio 2 have also lost a fair few with strange managerial/funding decisions (he said, staring in Alex Lester).
Very sad news. A legend of a broadcaster. What a career he had. Always played such good music. Sounds of the Seventies was wonderful featuring superb interviews and tracks you'd almost forgotten about. RIP.
Gutted, I followed Johnnie throughout his career. One of the all-time DJ greats. His love of music was only surpassed by his love of his wife 'Tiggy'. A very sad day.....RIP sir and thankyou for the decades of music xx
Used to admire his lunchtime Radio 1 show, we all used to listen to the chartshow during break at school, and remember that he refused to play the Bay City Rollers because they were dreadful.
For many years our Sunday afternoon dog walks were - in the car, there and back - backdropped by ‘Sound of the 70’s’, with Johnnie Walker - velvet voice, musical tastes arrowing in on mine
