Albert Uytenbogaardt RIP

Former Goalkeeper Albert Uytenbogaardt, has sadly died at the age of 94.

Born in Cape Town in 1930, he joined Charlton Athletic in October 1948, and was a long term understudy to Sam Bartram, making his league debut on the 18/12/1948 at home to Stoke City.

He was, until his death, the oldest living former Addick.

  • RIP ‘Humphrey’,
  • RIP - 94 is a good innings.
  • RIP.

Would have cost a few Bob to get his name on the shirt today.
  • My Bruv will be very upset.
    RIP Big Man ♥️
  • Humphrey scored a goal from his own penalty area in a reserve match.

what about "Give me a U, give me a Y......."

RIP my old dad used to talk about him, did he have a huge throw?
  • RIP former Addick.
  • Had a good innings, RIP. I hope the Wrexham hype does not ignore this and he gets a minutes silence or clapping tomorrow
  • RIP Addick.
  • RIP - saw him on the few occasions Bartram was not available. A huge presence and today would have walked into our present team without a challenge
  • A good candidate for a minute's applause. Amazing dedication to stick with the club so long as a deputy.

Part of me thinks we should commemorate him by making a statue and putting it outside the West Stand in place of Sam once every two seasons.

    RIP

  • RIP. Really nice man.

    Agree

Was fortunate enough to meet him in 2005 at the centenary party when we carried a crossbar from East St to the Valley.  People took turns and I was lucky enough to share duties with the big man himself.
He was so gracious that day. Bruv and I really fell for him. An absolutely lovely man.
  • Always sad when one our living history passes away.
But it had a good innings I hope he has left lots of fond memories to his family and thar declining numbers of Charlton supporters who saw him play.

He was a good guy. I met him. But you can’t sensibly have a minute’s applause for someone who played six matches (especially when Sam didn’t get one).
