Wasps rugby club

  • Reading through those rules that Henry posted, I suddenly get a sinking feeling. If they're required to shift games around to accommodate the needs of broadcasters, that's quite hard to do if the host club has both men's and women's teams, playing on Saturdays and Sundays. Unless the host club asks to have its women's team's games scheduled for the same weekend as the men, so that alternate weekends have either two host club games or none. In which case the rugby club could occupy the alternate weekends and could be free to shift to a Sunday without clashing. A number of people on the thread about the women's team have posted that it's a pain getting to the Valley twice in one weekend and puts them off going on the Sundays. I wonder if we're about to be told that in future we're going to have all women's games the same weekend as the men?
  • Didn't think the ground belongs to cafc so how can we sub let it without the owners permission..just saying

Depends on the nature of the lease
  • We just say 'Roland we're leasing the ground to Wasps so go do one'.
  • So you all believe there will be lots of money comming to Charlton if this goes ahead.
I find that very doubtful myself.
This is a team that has not existed for 2 years playing in area we're there is no track record of major support for professional rugby.

Don't think anyone has said that, most have said the opposite!

Lady at work and her family are huge wasps fans and used to travel up to Coventry to see them. So her her husband and 3 older kids would go.

Not my bag really, they would be going into the same league as Blackheath who get crowds of 6/700 max a week edit they are applying to go into the championship which is a league above. Looking online most clubs get gates at that level of 1500/2000.

would I go if there was a potential cheap day out for Charlton fans - yes I’m sure there would be some like me and then you create some new fans.
  • Where have they secured land to build a new stadium?

    Swanley apparently

  • Where have they secured land to build a new stadium?
The BBC article says Swanley. From memory I recall it being mooted that they would be playing where the Golf club is/was just off J3 of the M25.
  • Let's hope the local council don't give any financial aid.
  • Can’t see how they’ll ever finance it tbh
  • So Wasps have an option to buy land that is part of a larger development, neither of which has planning permission, where access is via J3 of the M25, a notoriously overcrowded junction where traffic frequently backs up to from Dartford Tunnel.  Good luck !
  • In theory, SE London and NW Kent is an untapped area for a professional club, with no other professional clubs in the area, and definitely some interest in the game.

However it does beg the question, that if the area is untapped, why one of the existing clubs hasn't gone professional. Plus with Wasps nomadic track record of changing grounds and the mess they left behind in Coventry, I'll be very surprised if it happens.

Indeed that is where this article seems to suggest https://www.kentonline.co.uk/dartford/news/wasps-secure-land-in-kent-for-new-stadium-315790/.

As said above it does seem wishful thinking to build a 28,000 stadium for a club that has folded, and will go back into the Championship, and currently has 0 fans in the area!
  • Terrible infrastructure.

    - Nearest train station 2 mile's away.

    -  Only bus route runs 1 bus every 50 mins, finishes at 6pm & doesn't run on a Sunday.

    -  One of the busiest junctions off the M25.

Unless they build a free car park that can accommodate 10,000 vehicles then I see fans staying away.
  • It may not be the golf club. There was also a plot of land just off of Wested Lane I think it is, as you go from close to the M25 Jct 3 through the lane to Crockenhill.
  • Maybe they're gonna join up with Millwall as I thought their training base was being built round there.

Their new training ground is further out, in West Kingsdown.

Both Wasps and Millwall are full of rucking flankers, so there's a definite connection though.

And a lot of pissed off fans all over the place

That's even more wishful thinking if they think that is going to happen.
  • The Darent valley is, to some degree, a protected area.  The route of the M25 was designed specifically to ensure it is not visible from the valley.  There are no lights on those sections (J3-5).  So the idea is to build a stadium with high grandstands and floodlights on high ground overlooking the Darent valley.  Really ?

There are plenty of fields around there but again the infrastructure is bad. The road leading off the M25 to Swanley is a B road & that roundabout is chockers at most times during the day as it serves the A20 towards Sidcup, Eltham & finally the South Circular & the M20 in the opposite direction.......as well as back roads towards Dartford.

Also its the roundabout that Stephen Cameron was stabbed to death by Kenneth Noye.
  • 28k multi use sports stadium that would need more than just a risky rugby tenant to survive.

We’ve just 12 years left off our Valley lease, Millwall have been battling against redevelopment all around them. Have a sense that something might have to give with one of them.

Interesting times ahead if it ever sees the light of day

Millwall are OK. Lewisham to all intense and purposes have agreed to Millwall developing the area as they now have a 999 year lease.
