    Meanwhile over at Cardiff, the managerial search goes on and today they released this pretty nothing statement which has if anything, just angered their fans even more. Made me think back to when we were so poorly run.

    I know I am going to get laughed at about who do we bring in and we need to give him time we cant keep doing this, I dont care anymore, every season we get worse and every season we give these shit managers far too long. Yes it begins from the top they are also a pile of shit. But this bloke has all the signs of the wrongun and think we need act now before its too late.
    Not calling you out as a lot of us agreed at the time, just think it's amazing the progress made in less than a year.

    Our group yesterday discussing at the pub prematch how funny it is to compare our attitude to Jones now to our last Bristol trip. Quite a few of us eating some humble pie and accepting that maybe we don't know as much about the game as we think 😂

    I’ve eaten my humble pie and thoroughly enjoyed it. Jones isn’t the type of coach who is a pragmatist and plays to the strengths of what he’s got available to him. It’s the Jones way or not at all. When he arrived we were in disarray and I was seriously worried that we might be relegated. He didn’t come in and use the “go back to basics” routine. He set them up to play the way he wanted and it took a very worrying length of time for it to start to progress. He was able to bring in some players he trusted from his previous jobs and the rest is basically history. Now he has a squad of Jones players and I think that we’re all pleased with how it’s going. Given support I think he’ll get us challenging for top six in a couple more seasons.

    Of course it's been an amazing turn around, no one can deny that, after the Awful football that was served up in the first half of the season to what we went on to achieve was astonishing and fair play for that. Do I think I was wrong to call him out at the time, no not one bit. We had been watching the same shit with different managers season after season, Jones felt like a long a continuation of them. The season he came in, he did very well to keep us up. It was a real tough watch but the main goal was completed and we stayed up. We then came into the new season full of optimism, I was fully expecting him to implement his ideas with the players he signed only to watch the same mind numbing long ball football we saw the season before. We was getting beat by so many crap teams. I remember moaning on here during the summer transfer window that he didn't sign any wingers or another attacking midfielder in case Berry got injured, to then watch us create nothing in games and play that horrible hoof ball was now unbearable. We then got to that Crawley game I fully expected him to get the boot I assume he did too, but they gave him a chance and he finally changed his ways and played with Wingers in Small and TC and are fortunes changed and we haven't looked back since. Some could say if only he listened to me in the Summer calling him to buy wingers this thread would have never been created :)

    I've supported the club for many many years and go up and down the country no matter how shit we are, its what I do. I have taken my now 10 year old for the last 4-5 years and he is now obsessed like I was at that age and still am, however it's been so tough trying to be enthusiastic and up beat in front of him watching some of the crap we have to put up with for the last 10-15 years. I absolutely loved watching him getting excited on the season concluding and to go up at Wembley was something special and I can't thank Jones and the boys enough for that. He has done a wonderful job and he has made us a real good side and I think we will easily stay up this year and might even Suprise a few and sniff round the plays offs this season and like every manager or player I moan about on here there is nothing I want more is for them to turn it around and shut me up, which Jones did and I'm glad. 

    One thing that does annoy me and I know not everyone can attend games for all different kinds of circumstances, but when you don't go anymore and watch every game on TV , I don't care what you say you will never have that feeling of going away to some shitty northern town week after week and every home game spending an absolute fortune for the team to play shocking football and give nothing back, you become mightily pissed off and bitter and you do say stuff on here you may regret it's called emotion and yes you will still have the same emotion as every Charlton fan, but you wont have the 5 hour journey home in middle of winter, you wont be 200 notes down, you will be in your warm house getting on with the rest of your day. So find it very strange why some weirdo's on here keep bumping this thread to try and prove a point it beyond pathetic and need to get a life.

    well said - i was for keeping NJ purely because we couldn't keep sacking managers but the football was shit and if fans like you that go home and away were not happy and let it be known, i don't have a problem with that (i wasn't at that point because i no longer put in the hours of travelling up and down the country watching us) and NJ shouldn't either - i'm so pleased for him and us that it's all now coming together and i really do think that we have a magnificent manager - he has 100% belief in himself and i think you have to have that to be a true great and i think he will be - brian clough was either brilliant or terrible - no in between - that is how i see Nathan Jones. The sky is the limit.

    I think the big thing that is gnawing at NJ is the premier league and how he wants to be successful there.The only way that will happen realistically is if he gets a team promoted like a Wilder or Warnock (.Frankly I'd have NJs management and coaching ability beyond those 2) So his destination is to reach the prem and stay there with us .

    The whole Nathan Jones ordeal has actually taught me a lot, I am far more patient now than I ever was. Thinking back it now seems ridiculous how many people wanted him out. 

    If I had to break it down with oohah metrics it felt like.

    5% - Stay 
    15% - can see why people want him to go
    80% - Out

    Or am I overcooking that? It definitely felt that way at games and on here. It would have been one of the biggest mistakes in our clubs history.

    In terms of togetherness, cohesion, understanding, all these team work buzzwords, we are the best we have ever been since we left the prem imo.

    If we are patient and the board keep backing him, I am fairly confident he can deliver us top flight football.

    I don’t think you’re overstating it. I was one of them questioning his tactically and coaching ability.

    I’ve now done a 360 flip and am convinced we have one of the best managers in the league - especially in drive, and vision.

    I am sure we will go through more rough patches. I just hope, myself included, can remain patient and not try and question everything when it does happen.

    I actually went through and skim-read the bulk of the thread yesterday trying to remember if i'd posted anything negative, turns out I hadn't posted anything at all until the Cardiff speculation.

    I used to watch that thread from the recent discussions page but in terms of how many new posts and how quickly they were occurring, especially after particular results like Crawley you just knew without even having to open what the main tone of the thread would be. Yesterday confirmed my suspicions, I never bothered posting anything along the lines of we can't keep chopping and changing managers as I knew it would be a minority view and not worth going against the majority view (Callum?)

    Braziliance probably does have it about right but there were also a lot of liked posts in support of Jones too and others in support of him probably didn't post either.

    Personally thought it was a very interesting read skimming over how non-support / support evolved, well worth a sticky as someone else said :wink:

    I'm happy to eat a massive slice of humble pie. Wanted him gone after Crawley and didn't see a way forward for him to succeed. Tactically it was awful and some of the press conferences were starting to get a bit Southampton era.

    I think I was pro Jones until Crawley when I was probably in the 15% but not happy about it, haven't gone back to check. Callum was definitely the staunchest pro Jones poster and was sort of out on his own a lot of the time.

    I think really it just shows how we were conditioned, a lot of our managers had been so bad that there was never going to be a turning point. Holden was a nice guy but didn't have the tactical acumen, Adkins again was nice but over the hill really, Garner was out of his depth, Appleton the less said about the better. I can see why people thought we had another dud, the fact he's a bit mad didn't help him either. But I'm glad the board showed faith. It's early but the same could be said about our transfer business this summer. It started a bit underwhelming and the money wasn't being flashed about and a few people weren't happy about it but it appears to have come good at the end. As Charlton fans we haven't had the luxury of being patient in recent years but it's something we're slowly learning again.

    Agree with all of that. Think it's telling that there was a phase when they wanted him gone too. Funnily enough he'd be a good successor to Jones if the level was right, he plays a fairly similar system and likes similar players (we know he likes Asiimwe & Kanu). I think the door would be open to him should he want to walk through it

    I think that’s way overstating it. I reckon there were nearly always more Jones in than out, maybe only after the Crawley game it could have tipped to the jones outs or a bigger group on the fence. I was always Jones in and so was pretty much everyone I go with or chat to at games. I think like with a lot of things it’s a case of the vocal minority is a lot more vocal so it seems like there are more of them

    Would say Jones has proven those who wanted him gone both right and wrong -

    right to hold him culpable for being 4 points off relegation in December with 1 win 13 - he proved that correct because with the same squad of players he already had he then showed they were drastically under performing - and the atrocious tactics, selection and strategy were to blame for that

    blaming and bleating at everyone else was hard to like and lacked the introspection I felt was needed to suggest he was capable of changing things

    However - also proven VERY wrong to want him gone because in fact he was very much capable of adapting things and turning it around, even if it took that to make it happen

    and increasingly recognising now that his blaming game and anger and sometimes weird dislikeability and interviews etc are part of his strength like they perhaps were with other extreme managers like clough, mourinho - he's a nutter but his incessant anger, hatred of losing and incredible drive and never say die attitude (despite all of us having lost hope at Xmas I think even the players genuinely believed they could still go and get promotion, even automatic) are worth a hell of a lot

    Blokes a lunatic and short of winning a Cup for us i struggle to see myself ever loving him like I did Curbs, Powell and Jacko - but i'll allow it all because he's succeeding and made me excited and PROUD to follow Charlton again

    Still think when it's all said and done he may manage Charlton again one day, an intelligent bloke who is adored here. 
    In hindsight, Jackson leaving was brilliant for him. He would never have succeeded that season with us, Sandgaard had pulled the plug on the budget and it would most likely have gone badly and could have ended his managerial career 

    I don’t think he was ready to be Charlton manager anyway, which we saw at Wimbledon where he struggled initially but then over time has really developed into a very good manager. Same with Garner and Holden, with Charlton in league 1 we needed experience to get results now, not a manager that’s still very young in their career and developing 

    I wouldn’t be surprised if he is our next manager. Jones will hopefully be here for years and years, but when the time does come we should want continuity and there are a lot of similarities between their styles of play

    I think that’s way overstating it. I reckon there were nearly always more Jones in than out, maybe only after the Crawley game it could have tipped to the jones outs or a bigger group on the fence. I was always Jones in and so was pretty much everyone I go with or chat to at games. I think like with a lot of things it’s a case of the vocal minority is a lot more vocal so it seems like there are more of them 
    I'll have to disagree with this. I probably speak with more Charlton fans than you? (obviously not a brag, it's cause I am sad) and it was overwhelming how many people wanted him gone that I spoke with. Also seemed that way on social media.

    I feel the overwhelming majority either wanted him out, or couldn't see an argument in keeping him anymore. I think that's why we saw Jones have such a grudge as well. That isn't manifested by a vocal minority.

    Fair enough to anyone who backed him, but they were definitely in the minority from what I can go by. 

    Luckily, our board didn't pull the trigger.

    Agree with all of that. Think it's telling that there was a phase when they wanted him gone too. Funnily enough he'd be a good successor to Jones if the level was right, he plays a fairly similar system and likes similar players (we know he likes Asiimwe & Kanu). I think the door would be open to him should he want to walk through it

    Fantastic achievement for Jacko, I am the same as you and feel when Jones inevitably leaves (no manager stays forever) Jacksons style is very similar to ours. 

    Jones just needs to give us our day in the sun again first is all  ;)

    You’re probably right but I do think 5% is too low, even looking back on this thread there were plenty of posters that didn’t want him sacked

    I always kept the faith.

    I know I am in a minority, but I didn't like the way Holden went to an obscure JPT game at Plymouth before his appointment. Appleton also never ' got' our club. Jones always felt a good fit.

    Let's hope we continue to grow

    I kept the faith. I thought NJ was clearly a good manager, but we'd fckd up recruitment. I was wrong on that part. 

    And I understood the criticism of Jones the time, but I didn't have time for anyone saying he'd lost the dressing room. It wasn't coming together, but everyone was still putting in a shift. And that should have been easy enough to see, because our past teams were full of shirkers.
