Peter Varney's medals donated to the Museum
Anyone who has ever taken on the task of clearing out their loft and/or garage will know what an unenviable task that is after years of accumulating huge amounts of tat!
I took the opportunity to donate the mass of Charlton memorabilia I have accumulated over decades to the Charlton museum and having walked around the museum recently what a brilliant job the volunteers there are doing.
When I visited the museum I noticed that there was no 2011/12 League One Championship medal so I have given them my medal to put on display and one or two other medals.
I would like to have given them a 1998 Play Off Final Winners medal (though they have one) and a 1999/2000 EFL Championship Champions medal but then I remembered that in 1998 and 2000 the only person outside the football staff who was allocated a medal was the club secretary. This caused a lot of irritation amongst club CEOs and under pressure from them in 1998 the EFL decided to allocate medals to CEOs.
I joined Charlton in October 1997 and the team was promoted in May 1998 and I thought it more appropriate to give the medal I was sent to Richard Murray which I did as I also did with the medal in 2000. It would be great if the EFL Championship medal in particular could be displayed at some point in the future so as many fans as possible can see them.
That also reminds me that Steve Sutherland was approached by Greenwich University as a result of the club’s promotion to the PL to tell him they wanted to give me an honorary degree which was a lovely gesture but again I thought that it was more appropriate to gift it to Richard and with Steve’s help they duly obliged.
Again it would be nice if the multi coloured gown and mortarboard could go on display at some point as it has to be seen to be believed and was awarded because of the achievement in bringing Premier League football to Greenwich Borough.
The museum is located at the top of the north stand and it would nice to think that one day it could be located in a more accessible area for fans so younger fans in particular can appreciate the history of the club - good and bad!

It was always the East Terrace until the development of that side when it became The East Stand, since the start of the 21/22 season it has been called The Alan Curbishley Stand...
It has always been The Covered End, at least since the late 60's and probably longer, and the use of the term "North Stand" niggles with me, ok...🤷♂️
