Charlton manager Alan Pardew hailed match-winner Andy Reid after his twice-taken penalty fired the Championship side into the Carling Cup second round with a 2-0 win at Swindon.

Reid twice picked out the bottom-left corner after Izale McLeod had been fouled by Hasney Aljofree in the 62nd minute and referee Keith Woolmer had ruled out his first spot-kick for encroaching.

Pardew said: "Andy kept a calm head to score the second penalty but that is the type of player he is.

"I didn't think he had his best game but showed flashes of his ability.

"Swindon away is never an easy place to come and I thought it was a very professional performance.

"We were disappointed not to beat Scunthorpe in the league on Saturday but I told the players you gain belief by winning games.

"I was pleased with some of the football we played, especially in the second half and we did not want to go out of the competition in the first round.

"I was pleased to keep a clean sheet because we are going to score plenty of goals this season but we will concede them too."

Reid's double penalty success came after Darren Ambrose had opened the scoring in the 52nd minute after a fine team move.

Chris Powell's cross from the left was headed down by Marcus Bent and Ambrose calmly converted from 12 yards.

Swindon played better than their League One status suggested in the first half and were unlucky not to at least register a consolation goal.

Boss Paul Sturrock said: "We were beaten by the better side but I am buoyed by our performance.

"Sometimes you learn more in defeat than from winning."
