Browny on Fortune

edited August 2007 in General Charlton
spoke very highly of Jonathan Fortune on Radio London tonight.

He said that Fortune is capable of being a leader and is an excellent player but has to put himself forward more and want it for himself. Apparently he played a 60 yard pinpoint ball to Lloyd Sam tonight.

I know some on here don't rate him but I like Fortune and really hope that Pards can bring out the best in him.

He has all the physical attributes to be a cracking player when you think about it.

  • Always had a soft spot for Fortune just as I had for Lisbie! Remember him coming up for a Reserve game at Rushden several years back, he came in the bar post match and was happy to talk. He was a striker once before being converted to a defender so has more than a stopper's abilty about him. The 60 yard ball tonight was a la Johnny Giles. He was solid alongside Bougherra generally. Pardew has soem defensive options as well as attacking options. Mcleod was very lively tonight and Marcus Bent put in an excellent shift. The move for our first goal was excellent
  • Remember last season, home to Pompey?

Every centre back on the books was injured.

But Fortune volunteered to play with a painful broken toe.
  • I think psychology is a big part of his game or lack of it.
  • i don't ever remember Fortune having a bad game, but i equally don't ever remember him having an outstanding game.

I think he does most things efficiently but without excelling, and his down fall is he is always liable once or twice in a game to make a couple of noticeable mistakes which cost him. Whether its concentration or ability, i'm not sure.
  • Fortune's game seems to rely on the understanding he has with the other centre back - and whether they compliment each other.

His best spell was undoubtedly playing alongside Jorge Costa - and his game grew by leaps and bounds that season.

About 18 months ago he was outstanding playing alongside Sorondo in the home game against Arsenal when Danny Murphy was a twat and got sent off, before Sorondo was badly injured.

He didn't feature much last year - because he couldn't speak French? ;-) - but was outstanding for Stoke as they powered up the CCC table and finished strongly.

Definitely a terrific CCC centre back.
  • i have always liked Jon and was glad he did not go this year i would have him starting CB at the mo.
  • [cite]Posted By: AFKA Bartram[/cite]i don't ever remember Fortune having a bad game
despite scoring, he had a stinker against Palace sha-la-la la-la-la-la
  • Only shocker I remember him having was Forest last season.

Would definitely prefer him than Chapple, I mean McCarthy.
  • He's what you call a solid Pro. Lacks Pace, which is only a problem if his central defensive partner also lacks it.
  • I like Fortune, but id give Paddy and Magic a bit of a go for a while, we paid good money for them for a reason and i reckon they'll come good.

  • He had a shocker against Watford away last year too.

Len's right when he says that he has all of the right physical attributes, but he has this tendency to just switch off sometimes and appears lethargic which is quite worrying for your centre half!
  • I think he needs the confidence of being told he's first pick. He has never had that apart from the short time he played alongside Jorge. I'd like Pards to give him that platform and I think he''ll rise to the challenge.
  • I've got more confidence in Fortune than either Paddy or Boogie. Paddy seems very basic to me and will get turned over by a decent striker, Fortunes got a lot more experience against some of the best strikers in the world so think CCC level will see him comfortable. Boogie....well not convinced at all he's looked dodgy everytime I've seen him, would like to see Fortune and Semedo play together at the back although he's doing brilliant job in the middle and can't see who'll replace him there
  • I think Fortune can do a good job at this level as he proved with Stoke last year. They're a top half club and were very keen to sign him which says a lot. I think once he gets in the side he's more than capable of staying there. However as Gibbs will probably never play for us, and Bougherra will disappear to the African nations cup for a month, Pards still needs to get some cover in at centre half.

I don't think Magic's going to The African thingy.

Didn't Algeria get knocked out in the qualifiers?
  • The man must be a legend as his goal sent Palarse down................does he really need to do anything else
  • Yep.....show us he's now the best centre half in the division.

    Thats all!
