Getting to the Valley from Eltham

  • Depending on how your knees are, get the 286 bus to Kirkside Road (halfway down Westcombe Hill) walk through the subway, left down Eastcombe Avenue, across into Fossdene Road and left into Inverine/Delafield Road will bring you out at the Valley Cafe.
Or stay on the 286 to Blackheath Standard and then get on 380 where the matchday diversion skips out of the Charlton station but takes you round the back of the East Stand to Charlton Lane / Thorntree Rd.

Or stay on the 286 to the Angerstein / Flyover and walk from there or jump on another bus back down the lower road.

Most people don’t realise that if you pay your £1.75 for a bus, you don’t pay anything for any subsequent buses you take in the next hour

Oh, totally, you could change at the Standard, but that's the way I normally come back from Eltham/Sidcup if I've been visiting the folks - simpler and avoids the temptation to leg it across the Standard for a bus! The 380 diversion doesn't often kick in before matches in my experience, so you could get as close as the end of Wellington Gardens.

I generally avoid getting buses on the lower road because of the state of the traffic (with or without a cycle lane).
  • If it’s a one off game and you’re nursing a knee problem then it seems daft to not get an Uber. You will most likely be sitting in an uncomfortable seat with no leg room for over 90 minutes, having to stand every now and then and putting pressure on the joint so if you do have a problem with it your knee is likely to be swollen by the end of the game. Avoiding any unnecessary pressure on the joint pre match seems a no brainier. Get the Uber.
  • So Richard……. what option did you take in the end and how did it go? 🤔

    It's NEXT saturday.

If it was yesterday he would've been asking for the bus routes to Shrewsbury!
161 to Woolwich and hitch the rest of the way 😏

No, bus to the Standard, another bus somewhere else, then a bus to Woolwich. THEN hitch the rest of the way!

Get an uber/cab and get dropped off at the junction of Charlton Lane & Harvey Gardens (Harvey Gardens is closed to traffic a few hours before a league game).
If you're happy to have a drink in Bartrams/Fans Bar/wherever for half an hour after the game you can get picked up at the same place or possibly in Harvey Gardens (I'm not sure when Harvey Gardens reopens to traffic).
You could even get picked up in the same place straight after, but it will obviously be congested with cars and supporters and a cab can't really wait there.

Alternatively, you can get a 161 bus from Well Hall Road to Woolwich Road and have a smallish walk through Ransom Walk.

Third option is get the train.

  • Thanks to all for the advice.

Actually I got a very kind offer of a parking place at The Valley from a Lifer. I was a bit embarassed to accept it at first, my problem isn’t considered difficult at my age by the doctors, but then my brother in law said he would be interested to come with my sister and I, and he has far more chronic problems of this type - years of pounding the pavements of Eltham as a postie have seen to that. And he has not been interested to come to a game for a few years now. It’s a sign - the “lapsed customers” are starting to notice, ( Don’t feck it up on Sat., Charlton, FFS!)

I get that buses can be useful, especially if you don’t mind a fair bit of walking, but its about 15 mins walk from my sister’s gaff to Well Hall Road before you even start. I think the train is a better proposition, especially the loop. I had forgotten about that, and I think they should make them more frequent, it would be useful for anyone wanting to use the Liz line.

Rather nasty flight of stairs to negotiate at Charlton Station though. 😕

Are the stairs used on match days? Thought the actual station was closed and fans used the side entrances.

Eltham train station is also on Well Hall Road?

I walk down Dunvegan Road to the car park behind the station. Not much in it but slighty closer than the Well Hall Rd bus stops, and of course at Charlton it's as close as you can get.

161 bus stop is closer to The Valley than Charlton Station if you cut through Ransom Walk which comes out opposite the club shop.
  • Train every time. We all love a train. It is a known quantity in that it is scheduled and generally more reliable. Also the valley cafe is a handy stop off that you don't have on the ransom walk route.

Agree (of course)  ;) last time at tha Valley, I took the loop train from Eltham. I had a seat of course. And I don’t even recall it getting busy until I got to Abbey Wood. So I was able to chill, read all the warm up talk on CL and arrive pretty relaxed. For me its a no-brainer. But nothing against buses. If there was a bus from Westmound Road to near the Valley, I’d take it.

  • What about the B16, it goes up Westmount rd towards Eltham high street, where you can pick up a 161?

At £1k a pop not the cheapest option.....

Well of course I can, in principle. However I can't see why that's quicker and better than sitting on a mostly quiet train.

And by the way I do use, or try to use the B16 when I'm there, to get to the High Street. I've found the timetable to be distinctly aspirational and often end up walking. But that's my trouble, I'm spoilt here. To get to a Champions League game at Sparta I choose whether to walk 10 mins up the road from my house, then take the tram 8 stops to outside the ground, or the metro three stops and a five minute walk,  and afterwards a choice of top pubs to have a beer in on the way back.( But then again Sparta is a shit ground to watch football  and given its 10k smaller than the Valley, there's no way I'll get a ticket.)
  • Well how did it go ? Cab/bus train?

On a separate note @PragueAddick , I was on Budapest for a city break last week and went past Ferancvaros stadium, looked up their attendances and noticed the highest was around 20k and the lowest was 800 which was against Puskas academy. Any ideas on why that one had a low attendance?

A kind Lifer lent us his car park space, for which we were very grateful. But next day my sister got me to download the Bus Times app, and it is very cool, would give me a lot more confidence to rely on buses.

Right, to your question. The thing is, are you sure that the Puskas Academy game was at home? If away, it is fairly understandable. PA is the team from Orban’s home village. Quite absurdly he has used taxpayer money to plunge into that village club. He built a new stadium with a ridiculously grand main stand. Every home game that stand is full of his cronies and biz people wanting to be his crony. But the village has only 1.5k inhabs so even though his money took the club up 4 leagues to finish 3rd in NB1 and qualify for the Europe Conference, inevitably they often get less than 1k. Its insane. But surprising if they couldn’t get more against Ferencvaros. And if it really was the home game for Ferencvaros, thats very interesting. It may imply that the Ferencvaros fans boycotted it. I never heard of such a boycott, but its possible. Budapest is the one place where the porky dictator doesnt get his own way.

The TfL Go app gives you next bus information from stops near where you are standing.

Do you or others find this Tfl app better than the Bus Times app I now have , which my sister uses?

Speaking of TfL, I have another general question: I’m paying everything by contactless but on my bank statement all I see is TfL and the amount. I am having trouble identifying what each is for. I have one for £13.30 which I assume is Heathrow- Abbey Wood. I see one more for £1.75 which I suppose is for the bus from Rochester way to Eltham High street. But I dont see a charge for the return journey less than an hour later, is that actually correct ? Then yesterday I went by train Eltham-London Bridge and back, so far nothing charged, any idea what it should be?

All the apps will use the data provided by TFL, you just need to use whichever one you feel has the best UI.

Regarding your bus charge, you won't get charged twice for taking more than one bus within an hour. In effect you pay for an hours bus use rather than one fare if that makes sense. I can't help necessarily with the train one other than to say that I often find TFL a bit sluggish to charge whenever I visit family. It's also worth noting that your contactless card will cap at a weekly/daily travelcard price so make sure to use the same card for every journey.

After you first tap in on a bus, the first hour is free regardless of the number of buses you use, also think the maximum bus fare for the day is £5.25.
