  • Bad news. Slightly strange timing too, why now rather than in the summer?
He's getting on a bit isn't he, maybe he's got to the point where he just can't commit to it full time anymore
  • Very sad news. Enjoy your retirement Steve!
  • Rodwell and Scott I assume will be in charge of whoever takes permanent charge from Steve

    Big shoes to fill
  • Good luck in your retirement Steve . There comes a time when you have to hand over the reigns and enjoy life .

Hopefully Steve is a big part of those conversations too
That’s what we should all hope for
  • Would love anyone to put together a list of players that Steve has passed onto the first team. As stated, big shoes to fill.

  • I’m just glad he’s staying on in an advisory capacity. Losing all that knowledge in one go would be a disaster. Hope he enjoys a less active roll and hangs around upstairs for a long time yet.
  • Massive loss
Silver lining is that he will still advise

Met him once at training ground - so welcoming and friendly

I think the word Invaluable as Henry Irving states is very true.
When all the nonsense and 'crap' was going on around the club, he just focused on the Academy and produced some great talent.
Really hope  CAFC respect and honour this man.
We have been lucky to have had some loyal people at the club, and he is one of them, I would Hate to think where we would be  without them ?
  • Steve Avory has been one of the very best Charltonians in our history.

At one stage a board member, I often wonder if he liked that role, but at all stages a talented, humane, savvy, and highly valued person at our club.

I am delighted he is still attached, his know how is immense and shouldn’t be lost.

The few fleeting encounters I have had with Steve left me with the impression of a man with integrity and warmth. He follows on from other good guys like Colin Clarke and John Cartwright.

His service must be marked in a fitting and substantial way, without the work he has done we wouldn’t be as well established as we are.

They had better be careful, and very wise indeed, when finding his successor, an almost impossible act to follow.
  • He may be a legend but he failed miserably trying to turn me into a footballer when he was my PE teacher. To be fair, he didn’t have a lot to work with.

Serously, was one of the nicest guys that ever taught me and didn’t treat us like the snivelling little shits we were.
@DaveMehmet he was my PE teacher too. Where was that Crawley?
