Name that Charlton game…

edited August 30 in General Charlton
New game I just made up.

Based on the starting line up only, can you recall which Charlton game I’m referring to?

Self imposed rules: league games only, no cup games allowed where heavily rotated line ups are common. If it takes a while, extra clues might include the season, the substitutes for that match, the final score and any goalscorers.

My 1st observation on that line up is, 8 of those players left the club as not considered* good enough, AMB is struggling to be the reserve keeper -Daniel Kanu is liked but still learning and Captain Dobson wanted to play abroad !

Programme collectors will be favourites to win but in comparison our starting or finishing line-up is so much stronger in 2024/25 season.

Richard Chin only made 5 apps for CAFC 🤔

    *Correct decision!

    Correct!

Second line-up: Carson, Sankofa, El Kharkouri, Hreidarsson, Thatcher, Rommedahl, Faye, Holland, Hughes, Thomas, M. Bent
  • Palace away - Dennis in the last minute ?
  • It was an away game but not that one
  • Arsenal away where Sankofa got sent off.

    Right season, wrong match!

    Well done both 👏
  • Third line-up: Rudd, Byrne, Konsa, Teixeira, Jackson, Holmes, Crofts, Aribo, Botaka, Novak, Magennis
  • It was in the 2016/17 season if that’s helpful.  Nathan Byrne, an attacking full back on loan from Wigan was only with us for 4 months (scoring the winning goal in an explosive match at the Macron Stadium on 28 January 2017)

Indeed he was! Now aged 32, he’s playing in the MLS for Charlotte FC.
  • Rochdale away?

I think this might be away against Shrewsbury? We had a few injuries and I feel Tex hadn't played much that season, but seeing him in the lineup made me think of that game
  • Who the hell is Botaka????
  • Who the hell is Botaka????
Jordan Botaka, a relatively tall and well built winger, Belgian but of African descent, his favourite trick was to try and push the ball 20 yards up the wing and outpace his marker to the ball, but he mostly just lost it

You’re right - got all the pieces between your post and  @Blackheathen who correctly pointed out the season.

Shrewsbury (A) in Feb 2017 - the match where Ricky Holmes scored a hat trick, but we lost 4-3. One of the rare occasions where Karl Robinson didn’t play 4-2-3-1, and started Jacko at left back while Lewis Page and Jay DaSilva sat on the bench.
  • Fourth line-up: Weaver, Halford, Bougherra, McCarthy, Youga, Sam, Zhi, Holland, Ambrose, Gray, Varney

    Palace home February 2008
  • You’re too good. Correct!
  • You’re too good. Correct!
From you I will take that as a compliment
  • Fifth line-up: Amos, Barker, Oshilaja, Pratley, Purrington, Morgan, Forster-Caskey, Gilbey, Washington, Bonne, Doughty
  • I think that's the first game of the season a couple of years back, I can't for the life of me remember exactly what season and opponents though! I want to say 2020/21

First game? You’re very close. That game was Crewe (A) and Lapslie started instead of Morgan.
