England vs Ireland / Finland

Squad has been announced for the opening Nations League games, with Lee Carsley selecting his first team

Angel Gomes the obvious surprise, who has been doing well in Europe since leaving Man Utd - and won the Euro U21s with Carsley; Madueke is another, but otherwise its unsurprisingly the names that you'd realistically expect to see appear... Adam Wharton maybe the surprise absentee?

Kieran Trippier on the other hand has announced his Retirement from International Football

Gibbs-White and Livramento also surprises. Surprising omission for Wharton too. Nice to see him putting faith in some of his U21 players
  • And no Kyle Walker either, it’s more surprising than it looks at first glance actually

In some ways being in Division B this time around for the Nations League could almost be a blessing.

New / Interim Manager (I will be surprised if Carsley doesnt stay a lot longer) given easier games to start his reign, and we should be able to beat the likes of Ireland / Finland / Greece, whilst trialling a few youngsters that maybe wont be seen when we get to World Cup Qualification

Wonder if it would have been a very different squad, had we been in Division A with understandably harder opposition.

Rico Lewis is at least a natural fullback. Could probably do a job at LB

Livramento is very much a Trippier type player as well isnt he? - In the sense he can play both flanks

    What, like Scotland?
  • Nice to see Gibbs-White getting picked.

Really like him as a player.  Was dead impressed with him when he made his debut as a youngster for Wolves against Spurs.  He came on just after half time and he was brilliant for 45 mins, best player on the park.  (Think from memory Wolves won 3-2 that day after being 2-0 down!)  Have always kept an eye on him since.  Two footed, quick, knows where the goal is, can play as a 8 and 10, can play out wide right and he isn't afraid of putting his foot in.  I'd have him at Spurs tbh.
  • Bellingham dropped too. Carsley out!

  • No left back at all. Where is Mitchell of Palace? Although Carsley did apparently play a right footed left back when he won the U21 Euro's

Where is Kyle Walker? You could argue he hasn't played this season but Foden and Grealish are in. Which raises the question of wtf Grealish has done to be selected.

Assume this means Ben White has ruled him out from ever being picked again?

    Where is Wharton?

Madueke not really a surprise given his form and Carsley knowing him well.

  • Wharton’s omission is a surprise. From what I’ve seen of him he already looks ready to play at a top club.
  • not convinced by this selection, though it should be enough to see off the Finns and the Irish
  • Maguire in but not dunk….
  • These games are the perfect opportunity to try out some new players. I've got tickets for the Finland game and buzzing for it.
  • I guess Livramento might be earmarked for leftback?  Strange no Mitchell.
  • Didn't even realise Madueke was English, thought he was Dutch as they signed him from PSV.

Who signed him from Spurs ;)

Yeah my knowledge of 16 years leaving Spurs is, I must admit, limited.

Good to see that charity exists in Football

Madueke scored a well timed hattrick just before the squad was announced, as otherwise would he have got the call?
  • Maguire in but not dunk….
Surely you can't think Dunk is better than Maguire? Dunk is absolutely shocking!

Think only Brighton fans rate Dunk. Can't believe he's got England caps at all , don't see what he does to be anywhere near the England setup.
  • Really pleased to see Angel Gomes in the side. Very impressed with his ability and it’s a profile of player we’ve not had available previously.

Possibly not, but there's not many other English right wingers playing in the PL right now, so he's probably the best option for a Saka backup.

Trippier can't play on the left. I've seen it with my own eyes.

Doesn't need to now anyway, he's retired from international football.

Let’s see who has the better season then

You'd expect Dunk to have a better season but that's only because once Martinez, De Ligt and Yoro are all fit there'll be questions around whether Maguire even starts.

Obviously doesn't mean Dunk is better though, as if Maguire was at Brighton i'm sure he'd start over Dunk.
  • Flying out to Dublin for the game next week, looking forward to seeing Carsley ball in action
