MATCH THREAD : Charlton Athletic V Leyton Orient : Saturday 17th August 2024 : KO 12:30

Good mid-day everyone, and welcome to todays match V Leyton Orient, our first league encounter this season here at The Valley of Dreams, still can't get used to these bloody 12:30 kick off's, just so not normal, and looking forward to a 3pm KO next week...
So following on from our impressive away win at Wigan Athletic last weekend, we will be looking to make it two wins from two league games on the spin, and after the narrow 0-1 loss to Birmingham City last Tuesday, which Nathan Jones described as an "excellent" performance, let's hope we are set for another three points on the board today.

We've faced off against Orient 54 times, winning 24, losing 20 and drawing the remaining 10, In our two encounters last season, both sides won their home game 1-0, us on the opening day, and the O’s on Boxing Day.

So let's see how we go today...

Luke Berry makes his full league debut in this afternoon’s game against Leyton Orient at The Valley, he starts in place of Karoy Anderson as Nathan Jones makes one change from the side that beat Wigan Athletic,

There is also a first place in a competitive squad for summer signing Matty Godden.

The Addicks are likely to start in the same 3-5-2 formation as last week with Alex Mitchell, Lloyd Jones, Macaulay Gillesphey in a back three.

Kayne Ramsay and Josh Edwards will operate as wing-backs while Berry joins Conor Coventry and skipper Greg Docherty in midfield behind a front two of Gassan Ahadme and Tyreece Campbell.

Charlton: Mannion; A Mitchell, Jones, Gillesphey; Ramsay, Berry, Coventry, Docherty, Edwards; Ahadme, Campbell

Subs: Maynard-Brewer, Watson, Small, Anderson, Kanu, Aneke, Godden

Clare starts - Pratley and Jaiyesimi on the bench

Notice that Donley (Who JohnBoy mentioned had been signed on loan from Spurs) was signed in time.

  • Berry in is great. Godden on the bench. Decent team that. COYRs
  • Happy with the lineup - very attacking bench though - no CB cover

Guess Edwards is the CB cover so have to hope him + a CB don't get knocks

Both Edwards and Ramsay played LCB and RCB respectfully at times during Pre-Season, so worst case scenario Jones will have some idea at who he can move inside.
  • Seen Reg, Zach and Tayo being put through their paces. They are not involved.
Makes me think Jones tells the players if they’re in shortly before the match.

Spurs player Donley signed on loan yesterday straight in the team 😧

    He’s a bloody striker too!
  • 3 strikers on the bench is a bit odd. Maybe Chuks will come on at 60 minutes, then be replaced by Godden at 80 minutes...
  • We have decent strength in depth now. Just need to perform and score - football is simple hey!

Feel this is quite an important game for TC. 3 forwards sitting on the bench.

Edwards can play LCB and Ramsay played almost all preseason at RCB so it seems that we've done that to allow us to have more attacking options on the bench knowing they can shift if needed. I think that's a good thing, three strikers on the bench to change things up as needed depending on how the game is going
  • Mega burger with all the trimmings at 1130 ?

    Just doesn't seem right.

Wonder if Godden can come on to play behind Aneke and Kanu, if both of those get utilised
  • Limp up front

Watson, Edwards have played CB before and Ramsey in preseason, chucks as a 10 so some shuffling about can be done.

Tuning in poolside from Chinchón, so won't be much running commentary from me, you'll all be glad to hear.

Hope to see Godden get a decent run out towards the end.
  • Berry/Doherty no Anderson .. questionable i m o .. trying to keep both his more 'senior' signings happy ?
  • Hopefully Godden gets some minutes. Looking forward to seeing him in a Charlton shirt
  • Feels like there's a lot more people walking down to The Valley today than there was last season.

Start of season optimism? School holidays and nothing else to do? Loads of freebies given out?

Not sure…don’t think Anderson has added much lately - think Berry adds more 🤞
  • Tuning in from canguu, Bali. We need to have a strong win today.
  • Just about the best line up we could have hoped for atm imho. Docherty back to his more regular b2b CM role and Berry in the CAM role. 👍
