La Liga 2024-25

Kicks off tonight with Athletic Bilbao v Getafe and I thought I'd set a thread up for this year's season as there's normally a bit of interest.

Thoughts/predictions for the season as well as teams you look out for?

As always, I'll be hoping that Atletico Madrid can win the title at the expense of Real Madrid and Barcelona. Some big signings in Julian Alvarez and Robin Le Normand should keep them competitive at the top.

The main focus will be on his Mbappe settles in at Real Madrid alongside Vinicius and Jude Bellingham. Will be formidable if they click.

Not sure what the coverage is like for La Liga these days in the UK but if you do see any games or follow it, feel free to comment here :)

  • In May I did Bilbao, Real Sociedad and Alavés in the space of about a week. Really enjoyed the atmosphere, particularly at Bilbao and Sociedad. I watched the video of Bilbao’s river celebration after the cup win which looked amazing. Planning to finally do a match at Real Madrid in October. Watched the Netflix series on La Liga which meant a bit more as I have now done 6-7 of the grounds.
  • Barely saw it last year due to being very busy with all sorts of stuff.

Interested to see how Girona do in the Champions League. Good result tonight against Betis.

Real Madrid appear to be doing a very good job of transitioning from the Ramos/Marcelo/Benzema era into a young and exciting side. Think they'll win the league comfortably, but would love to see Atletico challenge them.

Hope Celta stay out of trouble, hope Cadiz bounce straight back. Hope I find more time to watch it this season.

Anyone know what's happening with Valencia and their "new" stadium that they started building about 15 years ago?
  • Not the best start from Madrid, already 4 points behind Barcelona. 0 goals in 3 league games for Mbappe.
  • Mbappe is and always has been overhyped. No doubt a good player but Madrids other players will outshine him this season
  • Obviously he's too good a player and they are too good a team for him not to get goals eventually, but the team does look a bit disjointed right now.

Mbappe naturally likes to come in off the left.........but that's where Vinicius who is their most dangerous player already plays, so currently it's not really working.
  • Barcelona's league fixture against Atletico Madrid in December could be staged in Miami - with La Liga officials hopeful that Fifa will approve the plan.

It would be the first time a La Liga match has been played in the United States. Fifa will make the final decision on the proposal.

The match is currently scheduled for 22 December, before La Liga pauses for its winter break.

Both Atletico and Barcelona are also scheduled to play in a four-team Spanish Super Cup in early January, which is being held in Saudi Arabia.

@CharltonMadrid - interested to know the thoughts of locals out there? Having their Super Cup played abroad is surely bad enough, but a league fixture too? Although this fixture potentially moving impacts Barcelona far more as La liga isn't renowned for it's travelling fans.

  • They tried to do this a few years back - think Girona against Barca was the suggested fixture.

Ruins the integrity of the competition. Hope it doesn't happen.
  • Incredible performance from Barcelona last night. Real Madrid 0 Barcelona 4.

Hansi Flick working wonders there, as they've just destroyed Bayern and Madrid in the space of 4 days.

6 of Barcelona's starting lineup were 21 or under, including 2 that are 17.

Not sure he is overhyped, given his performances in world cups for France.

Just be interesting to see if he can be as effective not starting on the left.

Is it me, or has he lost some of that electric pace ?

Furthermore, eight of the eleven reserves yesterday were 22 or under! Lewandowski is still knocking in the goals at 36 while ‘veterans’ like Raphina, de Jong and Dani Olmo are still only 27, 26 and  27 respectively. They are going to be a force to be reckoned with for the next ten years.

  • Don’t know if I read it on here or one of my kids told me
apparently the longest unbeaten run in LaLiga is 43 games by Barcelona, Real Madrid were unbeaten for 42 games before Saturdays match!
