He was excellent especially first half .. he won lot of headers and knocked down a few one leading to our best chance in the first half for Berry , he does not stop harassing the defenders and we noticed the difference when he was not in the pitch as Rotherham suddenly had time in the ball which saw then gave there best spell in the game in second half .. good to see Godden up top and there were encouraging signs like in pre season of the link up play which will only get better .. …. Does the hard graft that players like Aneke and most likey Leaburn when fit will benefit from …

The difference is that Chuks affects the game more than Ahadme does and everyone can see him win the ball, make it stick, bring others into play, etc. So if Chuks misses one from close range, it's more forgivable than a player struggling to contribute - who then gets a few chances and fails again. But come on, you know all this.

Certainly wasn't a 'sitter' but I'd hope he'd hit the target.

The 4 year contract seems very generous.

Come off it! Barring an actual open goal, that is as good a chance as you could possibly hope for. Shocking shocking miss.

Chuks is actually surprisingly poor in the air. Or rather his heading accuracy isn't great, as he wins headers in great positions but doesn't get enough on target.

Jones' system requires a target man like Ahadme so can't see him being dropped anytime soon unless he wants to change his style up completely. Aneke can do a similar role but obviously won't be starting and despite his size, Leaburn is not good in the air. 

It will take time, we are 5 games into the season. Hopefully he'll get a goal against Shrewsbury and build from there. I thought he played the role quite well yesterday, should have had a goal and could have had an assist with some of his flick ons.

But I think that’s because he’s not relaxed and he’s trying too hard. His agility did seem to improve second half when he changed his boots too. 

I don’t think he’s amazing but there’s more of a player in there than lots on here see

That's gloriously inconsistent there though, which is actually a very helpful illustration of my point. Ahadme wasn't brilliant by any stretch yesterday but he did affect the game, particularly in the first half. He was unfortunate in that Berry didn't make the most of his chance that Ahadme headed down perfectly for him and did well getting that ball across the face of goal but Godden hadn't read the movement and neither had anyone else. Conversely he missed a good chance in the box and failed to get a header on target that even if he had would almost certainly not have gone in. If Berry makes more of his opportunity then Ahadme's made a goal but he's at the mercy of another player's contribution there. Bringing people into play as you would say. So far on this thread since yesterday though instead of generally being given that balance he's been described as 'shit', 'dog shit', 'dog shit' again, 'fucking donkey', 'absolute carthorse' and perhaps most offensively of all 'Pawel Abbott'. That's what I'm talking about, that's an absolutely incredible overreaction to a player 5 games in but the pile-on is available so people are going to steam in as long as they can. It's unpleasant. The thing as well is that we all love Chuks and he'll be afforded grace when he misses, but the second he gets injured again people will be talking about cancelling his contract and having him medically retired. Chuks has been told not to go on here and other online Charlton content because of how nasty the things people say about him are when he picks up an injury. There's a real growing inability to talk about football with any nuance in the modern day, players get given 30 minutes to impress, 90 minutes to go on a list and 2-3 games before there's talk of cancelling contracts and just random sweary abuse. That's what I have a problem with, it's absolutely beyond doubt that people need a scapegoat or they can't properly engage with their football and that's crazy to me. At least under Powell when we were good it was poor old Alex Dyer who got the grief instead of the players, that was an odd time.

This is part of it for me, some of the problems may be in his head. He may be a player who needs time to settle in, but for some they’ve already seen enough to add him to the long list of terrible signings. So black and white, it’s like a race to be the first to recognise his supposed lack of talent.

He scored 11 for Cambridge and was out injured for a chunk of the season, and we know our crossing and set pieces need to improve.

He’s also known for working hard and being committed on and off the pitch.

It’s not a huge stretch for me that a 23 year old with his attitude who also needs a good supply of crosses may turn out to be capable at this level. Not every signing gets off to a fantastic start, but after years of mediocrity we as a fanbase are ready to write players off incredibly quickly as we think we’ve found another one after just 5 league games.

I was replying to your point about why Chuks' miss is treated differently to Ahadme's, or why any player's might be treated differently to another players. They always are. It's just football. And life. Few things are judged objectively. 

I don't think any of the other stuff you have a problem with is new in football, it's as old as the game itself!

A lot of our threat came through him yesterday, won nearly every ariel challenge, you can also see that given the service he will get get on the end of things in the box. If you have a player who's strength is in the air then surely crossing into him is a prerequisite, I counted one cross whilst he was on the pitch and that was from Small, his only one, he got on the end of it and directed it towards the goal. We are not fluid enough yet and because we play Berry in behind the front two we are not using the width, the width comes from the wing backs and whilst I think the three who have played as wing backs have been defensively sound, there needs to be more emphasis on their delivery or we play higher up the park which Allan Campbell made us do yesterday.

I don’t think anyone can knock his effort but what’s worrying is his footballing ability, how many times does he have space to run into and the ball gets caught up in his feet and he goes falling over looking for a foul to save himself.

When that happens he costs us opportunities, I would rather have TC in his place next to Godden. He looks stronger every week physically.

Aneke’s header had an xG of 0.23 

Ahadme’s chance had an xG of 0.29

Worst miss of the season so far was actually an effort from Ahadme against Orient that was saved (don’t remember that tbh)

I know the difference is that Chuks then scored his goal (great strike but Phillips palms it into his own net and will be disappointed) but I do feel uncomfortable looking at how Ahadme is getting more stick for the header that he failed to get on target from nearer the edge of the box than Chuks gets for that monstrosity. I think the level of grief would have been the same regardless of if Chuks hadn't scored as well. All I'm saying is that a lot of our players, and all players in L1, are quite shit an annoying amount of the time and we definitely pick players to target disproportionately over others. They're all our players in the end though.

Aneke’s header had an xG of 0.23 

Ahadme’s chance had an xG of 0.29

Worst miss of the season so far was actually an effort from Ahadme against Orient that was saved (don’t remember that tbh)

The problem is he's panicked and over-corrected to blast it high. I don't think it's the absolute cert people are making out, it's nowhere near as bad as Chuks somehow managing to not put a simple header in from 2 yards and instead putting it wide, but Chuks scored and has a decent history with us so the criticisms get applied inconsistently. Ahadme should have put that on target, I'd even rather he'd drilled it into the defender's leg for a block, but the way people queue up to dig out certain players once they realise a pile-on is in the offing is quite unpleasant

To be fair he was back pedalling to reach it and did well to even make contact and direct it downwards. Not seen the highlights but that’s what I remember from the game. 

Watch it again on the highlights. He does take a step back but that's because he reads it well and then as it comes over all he has to do is shuffle across and nod it in. Instead he somehow puts it wide which is more impressive in its own way. Chuks does this though, I'm typically far more confident in him with a difficult chance than a simple one, he's a weird guy like that. Look at the screenshot below with the ball just as it's about to drop onto Chuks' head.

If we have a worse miss this season we will have done very well/badly. It's Chuks though, we like him and players miss chances, there's nothing wrong with giving them a break. Agreed. There was masses of unprotected goal to aim at. The defenders weren't in a position to properly block the shot either, so that even if it had touched them it wouldn't have rebounded out and instead might just have deflected in anyway.

I think the difficulty element to the shot was the time or lack of it he had. Having said that, I would have been upset with myself if I missed it. Just pass it into the net with a little bit of elevation.

He hasn't had the best of start.. But he certainly isn't as bad as some of the crap we have had up top over the years.. Give him a bit of time.. He will come good.
