ZZ and winger options

edited August 2007 in General Charlton
I keep hearing people suggest he play on the wing.

He was very poor in that position and it was pretty much recognised he is not suited out wide, being better in central position or in the hole. Same with Ambrose, and Reid cos of lack of pace.

So our wingers consist of

Thomas, Sam, Christensen - am I missing anyone?

and possibly McLeod and Sinclair? could also do a job there. This Racon fella has been brought in as a central midfielder apparently.

  • I think Reid might have to stay out wide, Graeme Stuart wasn't pacy but did a great job in that position.

thats the thing, Reid doesnt do a great job in that position.

In my opinion that is why Thatcher looked poor on saturday, he was playing in two positions effectively.

Despite Ambrose's decent pre season i would have him or ZZ on the wing with Thomas the other side with Reid in the middle.
  • i see ZZ as more central than a wide player. If he was to play wide, he would be best in that narrow Graham Stuart role.

Think Pards is going to find it very difficult to keep a number of people happy.
  • Reid better in a floaty role IMHO..

Agreed. Thatcher had to cover an awful lot of ground on saturday to give us any sort of width on the left.

I think that Ambrose is better when he is played through the middle however he is more likely to stay out wide that Reid and so until Thomas is fit again, I think we need to play Ambrose and Sam as the widemen with 2 from Reid/Semedo/ZZ in the middle.
  • Reid did well on Saturday I think, the a tendency to drift in too much should be addressable, I am not sure Ambrose will be a shoe-in now ZZ and Racon are here. I expect Reid and ZZ to be sure of a place, probably Thomas too if he can manage to stay fit for a couple of games at a time. Perhaps a typical midfield could be:

    Reid ... Racon/Semedo ... ZZ ... Thomas/Sam/Ambrose
  • [cite]Posted By: AFKA Bartram[/cite]Think Pards is going to find it very difficult to keep a number of people happy.
Up front, Bent, Todorov, Varney, McLeod, Iwelumo probably all expected to feature regularly - it may be dawning on Iwelumo that he is unlikely to start many games - time will tell.
  • Thats only 2 starting and 2 on the bench, taking into account injuries i'm sure they'll all get plenty of game time.
  • Only 2 out & out wingers really at the moment imho; Thomas and Sam. Christensen should be but needs to learn a lot about attitude, and Sinclair looks far better suited inside (didn't look at all like a winger at Aldershot). Pards obviously pleased with Ambrose pre-season, but he might well find himself nudged out to the wing for a while. The 2 new signings have certainly increased the options - hope soon we're all feeling spoiled for choice, rather than desperate to find a successful formula.
  • I reckon our best midfield is going to be

    Thomas - Semedo - Zheng - Reid

That gives us a nice balance of a dribber, holding player, box-to-box man and creativity?

    Any good?

Well, Samedo has looked good as anchorman so far - but he was bought as a central defender.

Rocky Racoon was bought purposely as a defensive midfielder.

So maybe he's the one once he settles in?
  • I'd have to say that with everyone fit there's a pretty huge selection issue. I'd have to say that my midfield would be as follows:

    Thomas-------Zheng Zhi-------Ambrose
    -----------------Semedo-------------------

Obviously its tough to say about Racon because I haven't seen him play yet. But he's likely to challenge Semedo for that holding position. I'd be tempted to play with Thomas on the right and Reid on the left, but Reid seems to have issues with staying wide. I'm also not too happy about Ambrose playing wide. I think he's far more effective when playing through the middle as he gets more involved. On form, he's a player we cannot have on the bench. But finding the form is always going to be his problem. There is always the option of playing ZZ and Ambrose as more advanced midfielders supporting a lone striker, but I don't see Pardew doing this with all the forwards he's signed over the summer.
  • I think Reid is too good to leave out; by giving him the captaincy to start with, perhaps that is Pards' view too.
  • I think he's only captain in Holland's absence. Who I forgot in my selection I must admit. He'll be pushing Semedo, Racon and Faye for that defensive midfielder position. Although to be honest, I'm hoping that those guys will get in ahead of him because he's past his best now.

The fact that Reid was captain obviously tells us that he's one of the first names on the teamsheet as far as Pardew's concerned. But we all knew that already anyway. What I'm saying is that I actually disagree with Pardew and I think we know how better players than Reid at the club. I don't think he is too good to leave out if he disrupts the balance of the side.

Is there anyone else who could be captain in Holland's absence? I don't think so. Its difficult to give it to any of the new boys and Ambrose doesn't seem a good candidate for me. Thatcher possibly, but his past would make you think twice. That leaves Bougherra who I don't see as captain myself, and Marcus Bent who I wouldn't have as captain because he's a forward (not a fan of forwards being captains). I think McCarthy and Weaver are potentials, but its difficult to give it to them on their first league game for the club when players like Reid and Bent are in the starting line up.
  • I think the days of a purely defensive midfielder are long gone.. unless that person has decent distribution like your makalele's, and not like some lump of a centre half...

    :)
  • And Makalele has always played for Chelsea in a fluent 4-3-3/4-5-1 .

Pards generally prefers 4-4-2 but still talks about defensive midfielders and the need to 'sit'.
  • When we played a flat four in the middle when Holland first came, it was Holland on the right, Stuart the left and Parker and Jensen through the middle. In the CCC I guess Holland and Semedo plus reid on the left and Thomas on the right should be pretty good.
  • I think that was largely due to the fact that Curbs was possibly the most defensive manager in the world ever.
  • Does anyone else get the feeling that we're overloaded with central midfielders and, particulary if JT leaves, lacking wide men?

I agree...in the centre we have: Faye, Holland, Racon, ZZ, Reid, Sinclair, Ambrose and Semedo.

Reid as club cpatian will start, that means one alongside him - one/two on the bench and the rest picking up a salary for doing nothing much.

Amrose and ZZ can cover on the right, but there we already have Sam and Christensen. Can Racon play on the left at all?
  • It's ironic - for some time now we've been bleating about no decent defensive midfielder (and Pards still refers to DM's) since Spotty left.

Holland & Faye are not exactly the future - but Semedo & Rocky are.
I'm not quite sure where Sinclair fits in.

ZZ, Reid & Ambrose are the central mid attacking options - Ambrose also able to play as a narrow wideman.
ZZ, to my mind, is ineffective and wasted wide.

Sam's started the season well, Christiansen not ready - so don't sell JT.

At the moment, I see the midfield in a transitional phase, and I can't really see Faye & Holland featuring regularly except for injuries or major loss of form by others.
