Charltons p*** poor set pieces....

No way intended to suggest anything new here as we all know how dogs*** our set pieces have been for years... (delivery and conversion). But while listening to a recent episode of No Tippy Tappy Football with Sam Allardyce, featuring special guest SCP..... Sam gave out a come and get me plea and said I'll be a set piece coach. I thought how cool that be, to have him come in and just be dedicated to that side of the game, a side often overlooked by most managers/head coaches.
I'm sure money would be a factor for him to come in at Charlton, but set pieces have to improve, surely its something NJ and team are looking at.. (plus a decent player to actually take the damn things)

  • I'm sure if we just made sure we regularly topped up his pint glass with wine then he'd go wherever.
  • Frankly, if the current coaches can't coach some decent set pieces then i can't see the point of them.
  • Dont need a set piece coach -  just need a player or two who can take a set piece.

If we start next season with Alfie May once again taking corners or long throws then our summer recruitment has been all wrong.

Arsenal have been the nuts on set pieces in the premier league, could do with employing the league 1 equivalent in a set piece coach, if we can afford it at this level, pays for itself.
  • For the last 30 years, every time we get a corner it's become a "thing" that I always say "We never score from corners" and I even have my son saying it.

Very rarely have I been proven wrong  :/

We were one of the best in the country from set pieces in the 2018/19 season.

As far as I remember we didn’t have any particular stand out dead ball players, the team was just well drilled and everyone knew their job in each situation.
  • I know the data spoken about in the link is from a few years ago but I still think it’s between 2-4% of corners lead to goals.
  • Found this interesting, makes a lot of sense:

Cullen was a competent corner taker, bielik and Bauer in particular (sarr too) were excellent at attacking dead balls.

As Red Chester points out, most set pieces don’t result in goals but some do and even aside from those that don’t, simply threatening from corners and free kicks, building pressure and having dangerous moments assists in building control, pressure and dominance of matches, making opponents panic about conceding dangerous set pieces that they have to defend etc etc.

The last couple of years we practically just hand the opposition the ball back without them having to bat an eyelid. If you’re defending against us at the moment, just go through the ball blast it out for a corner, concede a free kick 25 yards from goal, whatever - it’s the right thing to do because there is no jeopardy in having to face a set piece against us.
  • Albie Morgan got a lot of stick, and his set pieces were a bit hit or miss, but he had a decent number of assists in 22/23, most from set pieces.

We also miss people able to make space to attack the ball. Johnny Jackson was brilliant at this, shaking off his marker then charging into space to meet the ball, instead of just standing there hoping for a header.

Not just about delivery - you need players in the box who really want to win the headers too. Perhaps Innis aside, that’s been lacking in recent seasons. You don’t have to be the tallest player in the world to score headers from corners if you can time a run and are determined to get to ball before your marker - just ask Johnnie Jackson.
  • To be fair to him, before his decline, Stockley was a banker for getting on the end of a well crossed ball..... Problem was / is finding someone to cross the ball adequately.
