POST-MATCH THREAD: Charlton Athletic vs Shrewsbury Town: Saturday 20th April 2024 | KO 15:00

edited April 20 in General Charlton
A double header to see out the season at home at The Valley provided a mixed bag this afternoon. On Upbeats Day, the Charlton Upbeats ran out winners, 4-3 over a decent Everton squad, scoring the winning goal with virtually the final kick. A more subdued affair followed, rather disappointingly, as Charlton looked to capitalise on a poor Shrewsbury team looking to secure their stay in League One.

In the first half the Addicks failed to effect any meaningful impact on the match. A new formation proved fruitless, with Charlton seemingly unsure at the back. Shrewsbury capitalised on the unease, providing some moments of danger that paid off for them on about 23 minutes with the opening goal.

The Addicks started the second half with much more intent, scoring only a couple of minutes in. The added aggression resulted in a counter attack led by Captain György Dobson bursting into the opposition box like an Hungarian-Viszla-possessed, rounding the Shrewsbury keeper and slotting home with his left foot. Charlton made changes as the second half progressed, but the winner proved elusive.

Perhaps our best player was Shrewsbury’s Sobowale, who cleared two off the line when it seemed easier to score. On a positive note, Charlton’s lacklustre unbeaten run extends to 14 straight.

Charlton 1 Shrewsbury 1

  • Nah,  s'alright!
  • Wet fart of a football match, first half was absolutely dire, second half only redeemed by Dobson going all Thierry Henry for 10 seconds, bursting through the defence and rounding the keeper for a left footed shot. Can't wait for this rank season to finally end
  • Officially worse than when I started watching under Andy Nelson. Blimey, that takes some doing 😟

Honestly that felt like quite a fitting end to the season. Rubbish. Shrewsbury have scored 30 goals in 45 games but of course, you always get one for free against us.

Jones wanted a full performance and I'm not sure he got half of one. Hopefully the talk of squad churn is real.

The idea Coventry is an adequate Dobson replacement is unreal, at this point.

Quite glad this is all over, for now!

    They should've really had 3.

Some of those Shrewsbury misses were amateur. We did have our own miss with Anderson as well though.
  • It’s hard to believe a 14 match unbeaten run still feels a bit meh. On a positive note  if Apples was still here think we would probably still have  needed something from the last game.

Absolute dross. Another draw. Worst league finish in 98 seasons. What a time to be alive. Yet people still stay for the lap of shame. Each to their own I suppose. Only 1 minute of that worth watching and half the fans still out for their half time piss/pint.

Hope I don't see half that mob next season, especially Thomas. Not sure if he's right or left footed because he's equally shit with both. Every pass over hit or under hit or behind it's intended target. He really is a very poor footballer.

Glad it's over. I'm sure NJ will sort it out and we can look forward to much better next season. I'd keep Wickham. If he and Chuks can do 90 minutes between them then with May, Kanu and Miles as well we will be ok up top. Both full backs are fine, Gillesphey ok too, need two centre halves as starters, Hector and REG as back ups. Midfield needs sorting out. New keeper definitely needed. Lot to do but trust NJ to get it right.

Don't mention the war (years) may not be 98 seasons. Anyone care to comment? Historians preferably.
  • That was the biggest losd of crap I've sat through. God knows how yous lot do that every week.

The only bit of football lead to our goal  - and what a send off that was for Dobbo. Reminded me of Sir Chrissy Powell's goal at the same end on HIS last game at the Valley.

I just really hope that Jones is well & truly backed in the summer as that 18 had no loanees & I would only keep 4 or 5 of them. I've been saying it all season - no width & no creativity. It seems Jones' tactic is hoof ball. If so I'm glad I haven't bought a season ticket for next season. We've been getting worse season after season & next year it just might be our turn  - we were lucky this year.

Not saying anything about the "intruders" towards the end of the game. I can only assume of was in "honour" of this person who died earlier this week. Not in good taste imo but that's all I'm saying.
  • One of the worst games I've sat through but I think we all knew that it was going to be like that. Nothing this team can do now matters, Jones got us clear and appointing him was the only thing the management got right.
  • Jones full of unequivocal praise for Dobson: "He's not a ball winner, he's a footballer. I wish I'd gotten in sooner with some stuff..." and he trailed off.

  • What an absolute shocker of a group of officials .. the worst this season .. how that’s not a pen on Kanu when bloke has strangled him in the box .. words fail me …… Jones experiment on the diamond system did not work mainly because the wrong personal was picked no surprise after 25 mins we went back to normal , how did Anderson stay on he long with Dobson ( apart from the goal ) had awful games …. Twice if Kanu and Aneke looks up there a simple pass and tap in .. but  we looked tired today very leggy at times …… another reason to try other players ??
  • The SE7 draw specialists strike again.
I think NJ has done a great job keeping us up.
but without at least 5 more decent players as brownie and Curbs have suggested, and the dead legs removed, this present team will remain a middle table league one outfit 👎👎

I thought that was utter garbage. An afternoon devoid of any joy. I will get over it but my enthusiasm for anything Charlton related is zero right now.
I have seen them win twice since the end of November.

OK maybe Jones has saved us from relegation, other than that his management and tactics have been poor, why some of you think it will be better next season I do not know
Because in an ideal scenario he'll be allowed to clear out the players he's had no choice but to work with - Jones hasn't had a Transfer Window yet, however we signed two players very late (Ramsay and Small), with both of them having "links" to him.

So if they've signed on the request of Jones, and he's allowed to dictate Recruitment this summer, then it might be slightly promising... A lot of IFs though.
