If his contract has been terminated then he's a free agent, so it doesn't matter about the window, does it? Otherwise Shrewsbury couldn't have signed Chuks as that was after the window had closed. Presumably they were hoping to transfer him out, and now that's failed they've agreed to pay off his contract so he can try to find another club.

It matters if you're already attached to a club or not. Chuks was fine to sign for Shrewsbury because he wasn't under contract anywhere during the window

That's wrong. He needed to terminate the contract before the window closed to be free to sign for anyone else now that it is hut.
He probably has enough to not need a club until January. Could see a previous club like Ipswich doing him a favour and letting him train with them until he joins a Colchester or Cambridge.

Weird that a guy who scored 17 goals in L1 for Ipswich in 22/23, has declined so quickly.
