A special poppy peace ball used at the Royal Artillery Barracks Peace Field Twinning project was presented to the club this last Friday morning by
Children's Football Alliance.
The ball will be on display in the CharltonTV lounge courtesy of
the Charlton Athletic Museum
before being presented at the Menin Gate, Ypres, in September.

The unique virtually indestructible poppy ball was signed at The Royal
Artillery Barracks Peace Field Twinning Project, 19 October 2023, by
those taking part, The Children’s Football Alliance – Woolwich Royal
Artillery - Charlton Athletic Community Trust – Charlton Athletic Museum
- The University of Greenwich and students from Notre Dame Catholic
Primary School and Woodhill Primary School.
The twinning with the WRA Barracks sports field was inspired by
Charlton Athletic player Herbert ‘Nobby’ Nightingale, killed on active
service with the Royal Artillery near Messines, Belgium, during the night
of the 11-12 January 1916.
The first Peace Pitch in the Royal Borough of Greenwich, and South
London, is one of over 69 International Peace Field Pitches on 6
continents commemorating all wars and celebrating peace through play
is twinned by the Children's Football Alliance with the Flanders Peace Pitch overlooking the site of the
1914 First World War Christmas truces.
The WRA Peace Pitch kick-starts the Meridian Line Peace Field Projects
and launches a new branch for The Commonwealth Children’s Football
Alliance.
Representatives of Woolwich Royal Artillery and The Children’s Football
Alliance will present the ball at The Menin Gate, Ypres, in September
2024, prior to the Last Post remembrance ceremony for those who died
in the Ypres Salient during the First World War.
After the presentation the officers from Woolwich Barracks visited the museum and discussed ways that the the club and community trust can work with the 1200 personnel based at the historic Woolwich site. The Trust are keen to involve the army with some of their youth engagement projects while the Head of Academy Player Care at CAFC are talking about involvement between the academy's youth cohorts and the barracks.
