  • Like most of our CB's, he was signed with a plan to play a 3. There is no doubt his flaws are exacerbated in a 2, but we don't have an obvious replacement for Jones. If we're going to persist with a 4 at the back, it’s an area N.Jones will need to address in Jan.
He’s poor in a 3 as well though. Just not a good player.
  • Too much time losing scraps with strikers, not enough time challenging for the ball. Good header for the goal today though
  • Was getting bullied by Mullin, embarrassing for a centre back Gillesphey’s size

Good left footed CB's are difficult to come by, they are few and far between. He was good enough to play regularly for a Plymouth side that won the division a couple of years ago. We barely gave a sniff to sides in the first 5/6 games of this season with him playing in a 3. The point is, he wasn't an issue then. In a 2 hes not physical enough, strong enough aerially and is generally far too passive.
  • Palmer & Mullin were a tough test for Gillesphey & Mitchell today, him scoring aside I genuinely thought he played well especially in the air, hopefully Lloyd Jones comes back into the side sooner than later though
  • Thought he got bullied all game, and his goal masked a poor performance. Don't rate him one bit, in a back 5 or 4. Fair play to Plymouth getting promoted with him, must have had some players around him.
My thoughts too. Plymouth were in general a side greater than the sum of its parts. But all you have to do is look at his career, who he’s played for and the level and it’ll tell you he’s not a very good player. He’s slow, he’s weak, and apparently technically good but I haven’t seen it.

Even with Jones back hopefully not too far away, we need another centre back because Potts won’t be here, REG is now cover for right back and isn’t strong in the air, and Zach Mitchell is young and can’t get in the squad.
  • Should not be near the first team.
  • As I said in the match thread, an English Miguel Llera, he is pony

I thought we might see Edwards moved to LCB and Small at LB yesterday.  Worth a try?

In different circumstances, I think that could happen, but only in a back 3. However, with Ramsay and Watson injured, it means we have just Edwards and Small as full backs in the first team. We aren’t going to have both playing at the same time. It’s going to be makeshift defence for some time until Jones is back and we assess in January.

Right back was always something that I’ve said needed to be addressed because even though Ramsay has been our best player, an injury meant we didn’t have sufficient depth or quality to combat him being out. We’re going to suffer from it now.
  • Yeah, watching their second goal again, what the *hell* is he doing?? Dobson is approaching Coventry (battle for the ages etc etc), suddenly Macca's like right well I'm getting involved here! Edwards has to come central to mark Macca's man, overload, ricochet, goal. And when it goes in Macca's barely back in the area
  • Is Potts injured?  Gillesphey has been the weak link in the defense all season.  He is just too slow.  In a 352 jones was able to provide cover.  It is pretty clear we need keep using a 442 to be able to control the midfield and he just isn’t cut out for that formation.  As much as I think it might be a little too soon for z Mitchell to be starting and he isn’t the fastest defender in the world either,  he has to be better than Gillesphey at this point

We technically have Edun too but I understand why he isn’t fancied by Jones. Hopefully no league match for a couple of weeks allows Watson to shake off a knock and some good tactical work on the training pitch
  • An Andy Scott signing I believe.  Our January business last year before Jones bought Ramsey and Small in was poor yet again.
Still waiting for Scott to hold his hands up as he promised.
Yeah every dud is his and every good signing is someone else, right?!

EVERY player we signed in January, including Ramsay, was BEFORE Jones was appointed manager

    Yes Potts is injured.

  • I’m also of the opinion he is poor.

Thought they could have at least got the score correct😀

100% agree. I would say that was his best performance in a Charlton shirt, he was big and strong, generally won the battles against them.
  • Quite like the guy. Think he’ll get better as time goes on.

What? At a stroke you would remove one of our most frequent go-to gambits. The aimless high velocity 40 yard cross field punt  ;)
  • Anyone, who plays FEFL, might notice Gillesphey is the top defender in League One (worth a punt given our double gameweek).

  • I do agree he is perhaps overhated/slightly underrated and scapegoated at times. But I still don’t think he’s that good and think we can bring in better this summer
  • He has had a decent season so far....always gives 100% and made some good attacking contributions of late. I don't think he chose the team tactics for the first half of season by getting the ball and launching it 40 metres, on a regular basis.

Fans have their favourites. I'd imagine most will say the likeable Alex Mitchell has had a better season than Macca?
  • He's never been as bad as is made out. No-one has played more than him this season and he's been involved in all but one of our clean sheets. We also benefit massively from his comfort on the ball and he helps give us a bit more of an attacking balance when we don't have Edwards haring up the pitch so much. As well as the blunders I think he also became a lightning rod for criticism when the team was static and uncreative and he was a bit stuck lumping it forward. Regardless though the lapses in concentration are too common and I like that Jones has seen Gillesphey's value but that he isn't irreplaceable. We've signed in McIntyre a player who is apparently very comfortable with the ball so he'll get his chance to show if he can take over as longterm we need a player like Gillesphey who is a better defender. Gillesphey would be very solid backup for a better version though.

Yeah, 100%. He's got some strengths to his game and he's decent enough, but he's still the weakest link in that back three.

I really don’t think fantasy points is evidence that he is suddenly a good player. He has looked better since Jones returned to the defence but while he is in the team we will always be at risk to a ball over the top of him or a player running at him

I think our system with Jones back next to him and then Edwards not pushing as high up on the left, is protecting Gillesphey and allowing him to play well. I still expect us to look to upgrade in the summer but I’m happy for Gillesphey to stick around as a solid backup
All it shows is that he's played more than our other defenders and keepers, as Jones, Ramsay and Small have all had injuries or periods of absence, while the keepers have shared the position.
