  • We have not got three called up for Internationals even if Connor gets called up, so I hope he does not
  • Would love  him to be called up for the Ireland squad, however only if it means the game is called off.

It will not get called off unless we have three players needed for internationals and if he goes that is only two so game will not get called off. Need him for Posh game, let him get called up after we are promoted 😃

  • Could someone eg @aliwibble possibly edit thread title as I keep thinking they’ve called him up again? Thank you.
  • Looks like Coventry Small and Anderson are not getting called up from the reverse lists for there county … which given the ridiculous rules around postponement is very lucky for us .

I know he was initially a player without a role in the side and compared poorly to Dobson, but the last month or so he has been immense.  He makes us tick and his pressing is amazing, he lacks the showy thunderous tackles but he nicks the ball back so often.  He is the best midfielder we have had since Cullen, on present form.
Said from day one Coventry was a massive upgrade on Dobson and been proved right ..

I wouldn't agree it is massive upgrade, as I believe that they are both top quality players at this level, albeit with different qualities.

Whether Coventry can go up to the very top, maybe, but at the moment he is integral to a team that is clicking every week. It is rare that a player gets that opportunity in their career, and when it happens it can result in one of two outcomes, either they fall in love with the club and want to stay, or they see dollar signs and want to move up! Let's all hope it's the club for Coventry.

Yet still got a score of 4 by one fan in his last player scores...

Presumably because his name ISN'T George Dobson...
  • He is the only positive from Appleton's time with us, an excellent footballer and so key to us being able to play how we do

Are we allowed to say he’s better than Dobson in the holding role yet? He does it without smashing into tackles and charging all over the pitch, yet isn’t shy of getting stuck in and still puts plenty of running in every game.

As he reads the game so well I think he’s got more potential to do well at Championship level than Dobson. I think he could step up and play as part of a good team at that level, hopefully that’s us in the future.

Huge turnaround from this time last year when he was decent but there were doubts he improved us and whether he’d keep his place.

Not saying Dobson is a poor player, there’s not a huge gap between them but all going well that gap should look bigger in three years time when Coventry is Dobson’s age.

    Very impressive stats yesterday:

Better for this holding role absolutely. We've craved that combination of defensive solidity and control for years. The real question is whether Dobson would have been a better player for us this season than Docherty. George contributed 1 goal in the very first game last season when he was a holder, but once Jones shifted him forward he managed 1 goal and 4 assists in that shuttling midfield role. Docherty has 3 goals and 1 assist in that same spot, though Dobson did that across about 13 games compared to Docherty's 31. The roles are slightly different as Dobson became our chief creator for Jones whereas Docherty is asked to carry out a much more selfless role where he sees far less of the ball but covers a huge amount of ground chasing and harrying. We'll never know who would have been better in that spot but we've definitely improved in terms of the player sat in front of the defence
  • I'd rather have George Dobson if we were bottom half with a poor squad that needs dragging through games to avoid getting relegated, but we're now a top L1 outfit and I prefer CC's composed methods of recycling possession; he's a quiet operator, but his habit of snuffing out opposition counters allows Ramsey to push as high as he does.
Completely agree with this. Dobson was/is a good player but the biggest difference for me is that Dobson spent a lot of time winning the ball going to ground, making important sliding tackles to stop attacks or prevent a breakaway; Coventry rarely goes to ground and wins possession by reading situations and making interceptions/ nicking the ball from opponents. Now he has some performing players around him to benefit from that more, the role he has been playing well all season in my opinion (I think he was one of few players in the poor first half of the season who was performing adequately) is starting to shine more brightly
Sat behind the dugout last season and both Nathan Jones and Paul Hart screamed at Dobson to stay on his feet.

Yes, if their countries get injuries
  • Two midfielders just pulled out of RoI squad. We may lose him to late call-up but no postponememt.

Assuming you mean Smallbone and O'Dowda who withdrew over the weekend, replaced with Andrew Moran and Ryan Manning already
    Phew

I heard smallbone withdrew because he was pulled off at the weekend.
A double Kenneth Williams there, congrats 🥳
  • Could be described as a Williams spitroast.
  • I agree there’s not a huge gap between Dobson and Coventry right now. Dobson offers a bit more attacking dynamism but it took time for him to develop that and Coventry might develop it too. I’m happy to see Dobson proving he can hold down a regular spot in a promotion challenging side. We saw him evolve and improve as a player while with us and if he’s built on that at Wrexham I think he will eventually get a gig in the Championship and do ok there for a season or two.

Coventry has the higher ceiling though. He’s ahead of where Dobson was at the same age and has a better football brain. He’s not as physically dynamic as Dobson but he doesn’t need to be because his positional sense and reading of the game are so good. If someone like Dale Stephens was able to go on and play a number of seasons in the top flight I don’t see why Coventry can’t do the same. Especially if he can learn to be a bit more expansive and progressive with his passing and add a few goals a season to his game. Even though he is now generally rated I think he goes a little under appreciated. I certainly wouldn’t swap him back for Dobson now.

Dobson played in dreadful teams for 3 years for us and was the best player for many of those games .  Coventry is doing well in a good side
