I don't think I've ever seen anyone nominate Peter Reid in a favourite Charlton team before
  • Well he was part of one of our best ever days as a club, if only peripherally ;)

Well - whilst I didn’t see Peter Reeves play - my late Dad would place Reeves well above Andy Reid - Reid was decent, but I’m sure the older CL’s would agree that Reeves was quality - sadly, career cut short by serious injury (and he is a CAFC fan to boot 👍)

It is a personal thing: Peter Wakeham had a great autograph with an incredible letter 'P'. Stuart Leary would be in my 'Best Ever' team, but Johnny Summers was my football hero. I remember standing on the railing at the front of the East Stand and seeing about 5 players Charlton restraining him from murdering the Plymouth fullback. It was like looking at Superman. His son was in the year above me a Catford Boys School - had a friend called 'Stuart'.

As far as a "classic" side goes, this one would take some beating.

    Bolder
    Humphrey
    Reid
    Shirtliff
    Miller
    Walsh
    Peake
    Stuart
    Lee
    Melrose
    Crooks
If you could pause a moment in time for anyone in the age range 45 - 65 (?) this would be it…
  • From the heart rather than the head

    Deano
    Sir John
    The Tank
    Rufus
    Sir Chris
    Robert Lee
    Killer
    Flash or Jan
    Kins
    Johnny R

  • Kiely
    Young
    Gomez
    Costa
    Powell

    Gudmundsson

    Bent
    Kermorgant

    Carson
    Rufus
    Wiggins
    Parker
    Aribo
    Rhodes
    Wright-Phillips

    Honourable mentions for me include:
Shelvey (how good he was at that age)
    Diarra (so classy)
Buyens (one of the bright sparks alongside JBG in the RD era)
Rommedahl (I hated how we didn't play to his strengths)
Reid (if he lost 6-8kg and gained a yard of pace he'd have been lethal)
Blackett-Taylor (our current most exciting player)
Lookman (same as Shelvey, beyond his years)
Taylor (through gritted teeth, but when he was on form he was on absolute fire)

Honestly didn't get to see that much of Rufus unfortunately. And Kins was a flip of the coin with Jacko.

Taylor is there because there really wasn't that many other profilfc strikers to include - I guess Shaun Bartlett,BWP or Johansson are the alternatives.

From when I first started watching, I've opted for my "classic Charlton" side to be made up solely from those that came through our youth system. It's a 5-3-2 with Joe Gomez deliberately positioned in the centre of a back five - if only to keep the peace between the two other CBs!

    Tutt

    Bonds
    Elliott
    Gomez
    Rufus
    Konchesky

    Parker
    Bowyer
    Lee

    Walsh (P)
    Leaburn (C)

    Subs:

    Randolph
    Solly
    Minto
    Konsa
    Shelvey
    Peacock
    Lisbie

  •               Bolder

    Young  Rufus  Costa  Minto

    R Lee  Parker  Bowyer  Jensen

            Di Canio

               D Bent

A few tough picks. Gone for Di Canio as a No 10 rather than having 2 out and out poachers (so Mendonca and Hales miss out)
  • Tutt

    Humphrey - Rufus - Costa - Powell

    Kinsella - Parker - Jensen

    Di Canio

    Hales - Bent
  • Started watching around 1990 or so.

    Kiely

    Young
    Rufus
    Costa
    Powell

    R Lee
    Parker
    Jensen
    Mortimer

    Bent
    Mendonca

    Subs:

    Carson
    Mills
    K Jones
    Kinsella
    Bowyer
    Hunt
    Leaburn

  • Kiely
    Solly - Rufus - Costa - Powell
    Gudmundsson - Parker - Gallagher - Kinsella
    Bent - Mendonca

Tried to go with a team from over the years.
  • Deano; Young Rufus fish Powell; newton parker Jensen Robinson; Super Clive Bent.

Bench includes Costa, Kish, jacko, kinsella, konchesky di canio. Best midfield I remember was Kish smertin and Murphy but only Kish is allowed near my team
  • 1965 onwards

    1. Dean Kiely
    2. John Humphrey
    3. Chris Powell
    4  Claus Jensen
    5. Richard Rufus
    6. Peter Reeves
    7. Colin Powell
