  • No, I don't think that.
Everything at the Valley is cashless, received and understood.
  • Any reason to state the obvious 2 pint price, seeing as no reductions from just buying the 1 pint…🤔
The two pint comes in a two pint glass. The pricing seems to be properly off though.
  • this is why the straw boater bloke had a problem. he had wads of reddies but they just wouldn't accept them. So he got the hump and chucked a semi poured frothy larger over some poor student who had just come here from some war torn country and this was his first experience working behind a bar where he was hoping to try and integrate himself in British culture and make a little money that he could send back to his parents who are saving up to come and join him here.

So what has that got to do with ‘change’ and ‘mental maths’ ?

    Total rubbish.

    My experience differs.
If you’re as condescending in real life as you are on here, I’d give you a wrong answer just to wind you up! 😖

Ask the person who brought up cashlessness in the first place.

If you believe mentioning the imperial system, and my having knowledge of it is condescending then crack on.
I will try to refrain from making personal remarks about you as you do so.
    Go for it.

Except the programme, which can only be paid for in cash, other in the shop, as far as I know.

    Gosh.
That revelation might cause a rift in the space-time continuum for some!

My response wasn’t about the imperial system, which I am sure is as obvious to you as it is to everyone else.  Had I wished to comment on that I would have quoted one of your remarks on it, rather than quoting the condescending one instead.  Simple really, but you crack on Seth! 🫨

If you think the three words I wrote that you quoted were condescending crack on.

The staff should be paid a good rate.
The staff should be properly paid because the prices people pay are very high.
I have heard capitalists say that a market finds its own level, if that is true then something has to happen. Exploiting the workforce in order to squeeze a marginal profit whilst alienating customers seems to be a poor version of capitalism…unless you have a monopoly or a captive market.

I assume they are paid minimum wage or very marginally only a little better.

I doubt any government will materially change that rate.

In this case I think really the issue is training / familiarity and that can only be down to the third party outsourced provider.

Supply and demand will ultimately apply and mean custom is limited but practically I think it’s just another example of how poor a choice food and drink is inside football grounds and indeed any comparable venue. I make you right in your observation that chips from the local chip shop are better value.
My point is better pay gives you a better chance of retaining staff, at risk of slightly contradicting myself, experienced staff are going to be better at their job and more able to pass on their experience of how to do things more efficiently to newbies. Most jobs involve finding more effective ways to do the job that the manual doesn't tell you, and that comes with experience.

Anyone who falls for the Peroni baloney deserves to pay £7.40 a pint...  ;)

They are part time staff employed by Gather and Gather, not ours.
We don't/barely train them, don't retain them and they won't be passing on their experience as it's generally different people each match behind the bars.
Presumably when they have more experience of bar work they will be paid more by G&G and won't be at The Valley.
I know they are employed by G&G mate.

If the scenario is as you say, then we are wasting out time even discussing it.

    Total rubbish.

It may not be widespread, but it happens. Hand on heart, I have had two experiences since we got to the UK on Aug 1st where staff given cash have been bamboozled by what should be a simple mental calculation.

Maybe the two pint price is to help people who struggle with sums.

I automatically know because of my age and education that if you hand over £1 for something costing 80p the change is 20p.
Indeed I also know in old money that if you hand over £1 for something costing 7s11d you get 12s1d change.
Most of my generation can do that kind of thing in their head. Now people can’t calculate the change from £1 for an 80p purchase without a machine.
Do people still pay with cash? How weird.

I think this is slightly unfair. Nowadays when nearly everything is done by computers and that service staff rarely get the chance to use their brains. Most restaurants and pubs have tills that provide the names of the food and drink and only show how much it costs once it’s been entered, and then it’s totalled for them. This is probably down to reducing the error rate from calculating the costs using their brain and staff from making some extra dosh on the side.

I kind of remember many moons ago I had been travelling and working abroad doing various jobs that didn’t require me to use my brain when it came to simple arithmetic (other than foreign exchange). I returned to the UK and worked in a pub where you had to add up the price of the drinks as you went along (and playing darts). I then started work in an office whereby I had to use a calculator (only recently introduced into the office which shows how long ago I am talking about). I continued to work in the pub for a little while longer but then found it increasingly difficult to mentally add up and then became more and more reliant on a calculator. I quit the pub.

I also find the same with the use of a pen as nowadays I’m always using typing into my laptop, IPad or IPhone. My handwriting now looks as though I’ve written out a prescription! And lets not get on to remembering telephone numbers like we use to do.How many people here know their family and friends phone number? 🥸

I recall that one of the owners in recentish years said that they recognized the issue and would improve the staffing competency.
This would be achieved by G&G/us no longer employing the cheapest level agency staff, but perhaps "employing" the next level up.
I can't recall if this was said under TS or GFP, but either way it doesn't appear to have happened/made much of a difference.

I still can’t get over a pint of Peroni in a plastic cup costing £7.40 at a third division football stadium. Absolute madness.
Especially as two stops down the line is the old harry at WA where you can get a decent pint of real ale for £2.74, or go one more to Plumstead and at the Radical Club get a pint for around £3.
You might struggle to do that at half time....
At £7.40 a pint of peroni in a plastic pot you certainly would struggle

I am talking giving someone a ten pound note and a 20p piece for something costing £8.20, and them trying to give us back £2.20...

When they automatically give me a paper receipt for every transaction, I might consider using the card more often. Until then, I'll use cash when I can and card when it suits me.
