Lack of confidence and excitement ahead of the season ?

  • I'm really stressed about us playing in the second tier after such a good run in the top flight.............
I do fear that if it's not this year that we go up it could be a very long time before we return to the premiership...
Unlike most i'm not 100% convinced by alan pardew,(don't care what he done elsewhere he hasn't produced for us yet) the lack of ideas/motivation from the team when it really mattered at the end of last season worry me and there's part of me that think's he'll be off in a shot if an offer came in from a premiership side.
If we win i'll be thinking 'well we should be beating so and so' and if we lose it'll be so depressing losing to some crock of shit in the championship.
Still love em as much as ever and will roar em on till my head explodes!!!
WE ARE STAYING UP SAY WE ARE STAYING UP!!! ;-)

WE ARE GOING UP SAY WE ARE GOING UP!!!
  • Its a second rate league, full of second rate teams, with second rate players playing in second rate grounds. The Fizzy Pop Pub League, home of Long Ball Football.

The signings Pards has made have been shocking, and a more ambitious chairman would have sacked him. I give him 10 games to prove me wrong.

Excited - No. Optimistic - No.

so what you're saying is..................you're really looking forward to Saturday then ;-)
  • *Awaits the ususal verbal bashing whenever I say something someone doesn't agree with*

No offence, but that's because most of what you come out with appears exaggerated crap.

The Championship is the 2nd highest league in this country. The top echelon of the game ? No, but its certainly not what you indicate it is. You seem to enjoy highlighting the negative the whole time, you seem to have no strong emotional tie to Charlton, and little real desire to see us do well.

I really can't understand why you don't go back to getting a season ticket again at West ham, because its clear from what you post on here that Charlton really isn't what you're about. And i don't mean that nasty.

Hear hear Bart cunning is a proper wind upmerchant.

I am well looking forwad to the season and to see us start winning games again. Varney s gonna be the bollox , Thomas will be the man.

    Can't wait
  • Charltons my local side, hence why I bought a season ticket. I had 2 seasons of Championship football watching West Ham. I know what I'm talking about when I say the league is shite.

I don't enjoy highlighting the negative at all. But I can't find any positives.

    Yawn!
  • i agree with pavo. was going to post up here this morning but had to get to work. im brimming with excitement...the social stuff will be better...the chants will be more varied...the fans that give a shite will be there without mobile-phone-picture-takers amongst us. we can assess new players...give teams a whooping...get bizarre pleasure out of awaydays 250miles away....we can see powell do 'the tunnel'...we wont have to watch the players stand and shake hands (yes i just read the CAFC website!), we get a full season from our manager...his chance to mould 'his' team who play 'his' way, new grounds, new teams, more goals, more points....a rollercoaster as opposed to a fight.

    COME ON YOU REDS!!!!!!!

  • I wonder if we had stayed up what players we would have signed? I'm not looking at the players signed by Fulham etc and thinking that we've missed out.

My guess is that several of those arriving now would have been signed if we'd stayed in the Premiership and that Darren Bent and Romm etc may have still have gone.
  • I'm personally looking forward to this season more than I have the last 3 seasons at least. Under Curbishley (much as i'm grateful and respect the guy) after Parker left I felt that we were a boring side getting results here and there and doing enough to survive. I know many people here would go back to the survival days in a flash but I for one enjoyed the 2nd half of last season because of the excitement of watching results of other teams hoping against hope that things would go our way etc. In short I got the buzz back for the team and the game as I personally got complacent and generally bored with it.
This season we're away from the flashy lights of the Premiership, we can concentrate on playing football again, the enthusiasm of travelling away and maybe actually seeing a win at the end of the journey should hopefully return. Whether we're in the mix at the top or not we should win more than we lose. Like others have said, the true fans seem to have claimed the club back and hopefully witty chants and general banter around the ground will improve (or carry on from the end of last season). Maybe i'm being too optimistic but for me I honestly feel like i've got my club back and the chance to relate to a few players again is an exciting prospect. Maybe i'm not ambitious enough but there's something about this club I feel is really special and you don't get that feeling elsewhere (of corse i'm biassed) and hopefully this season will prove me right. Who knows?
  • [cite]Posted By: LenGlover[/cite]I am very apprehensive about the potential consequences of this relegation because my first 20 years or so supporting the Club comprised of a gradual decline with any decent players being sold and culminating in nearly going out of business and then exile.

Most if not all of us on Charlton Life will (and have) continue to go regardless of the level the Club is playing at. I'm not sure we represent the whole support though. This season the support will hold up partly because of the free season ticket offer. However if we miss out I think the core support could almost halve overnight. If that happens there will be immense financial pressures and we live in a more hardheaded, ruthless business world than we did back in 1984.

It is not beyond the realms in the not too distant future that The Valley could be sold off for development given the desire of the government to concrete over the whole of the South East. It would be a prime brownfield site.

I realise that this post makes OOH AH Mortimer sound like Bonnie Langford or some other insufferably cheery person, but I genuinely fear the worst could happen if we don't get back to the Premiership in the next year or two.

The only thing that MIGHT save us is something that we didn't have in the eighties to any great extent namely the community work. Would the government or Greenwich Council want to be held accountable for destroying that?

Blimey len........ Take it EASY!!!!!!!!! its all gonna be alright...

I think were gonna do all right... a couple of bits of luck and we could be sweet, Pards has been there and seen it all before...

As for Cunning, Ive been away as Ive not had the internet.... WEST HAM season tickets... get F@#$%$ and get on KUMB!!!!!!!
  • I echo RedArmySE7......although I hated getting relegated at least last season had something riding on it. The previous 3 seasons, since Jan 2004 when Parker got sold just got worse and worse, more dull and boring as every game passed. Curbs signed mediocre player after mediocre player (Hughes, M Bent) and players other teams don't want (Murphey,Jeffers,Romm,) - i remember a couple of years back, sitting a a home game not even bothered if we won or lost as it meant nothing, even thinking "why am I here" and should I bother the following season.

Who can forget last season.......the last minute defeat at goodison still got to me days later, and that would never had happened a few years before. Now we have to rebuild and I am optimistic at our chances this season. Defence looks solid and we have probably the best midfield going (thomas, Semedo,Reid.Ambrose) - just concerned we don't have enough quality upfront. Varney may be the man, but will miss the start of the season and we all know a good preseason is vital for a 46 game league. Jury still out on Ilwelumo and Toddy, Dickson should start on the bench and play the last 15-20 mins , but I think Pards still doesn't trust him yet. M Bent only scores with blondes.

Give it 10 games and then lets judge.

In my opinion you can say what you like about the league, the players, the signings we've made and whether you're optimistic or not. But to say you're not excited is laughable. How can you not be excited? Isn't that the point of supporting the club? I live 5000 miles away and I'm almost peeing my pants with excitement at the prospect of getting up at 6.00am on Saturday, hung over, to try and get some moody feed on the internet and spending a fortune on ringing my mates on their mobiles at the valley to find out what's going on and to sample the atmosphere any way I can from the other side of the World. Ok, it's not Man Utd, but who cares because I don't support Man Utd, I support Charlton and whether we're playing Scunny or Thamesmead Town I'll be excited.

Enjoy Saturday people and lets hope we get 3 points.
  • Im with you Vancouver!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • [cite]Posted By: WSS[/cite]blimey Len...

...going to put some Dido on the radio now.

I've gone for some "happy" Radiohead after reading this lot - followed by some Sabbath for the cheery factor.
  • Great post.
  • [cite]Posted By: LoOkOuT[/cite]Great post.

S'allright for you. It's half four in the morning here - on a school night - and I'm smashed!!!
  • Im looking forward to it in a big way more so than the last 2 or 3 seasons

  • Living in the NW the PL was great as we saw plenty of away matches, now the reality hits home, fewer matches to watch and very limited media coverage, Like Len I remember the old days in the 2nd & 3rd Divisions when the club was in free fall with owners who couldn't fund a renaissance and managers coming and going on a regular basis.

That was then, this is now - we have far more passionate supporters, we have a board that cares, a management team that has a successful record and a team we don't know playing teams we haven't seen for years. So how do i feel, anxious, excited, confident of more wins and more exciting football, out of it as the media coverage is poor, unsure of how well we will do ( but I have that feeling at every season's start) but above all proud to be a Charlton supporter and certain that come what may I will still be a Charlton supporter next may.
    COME ON CHARLTON.
p.s. me and The Lass migth even get to the Valley this year!
  • I'm worried about the embarrasment. I'm missing Scunthorpe so Sheff Weds is my first game - I'll be the idiot in the Upper North getting all the players names wrong when I shout abuse at them! (smiley, winky thingy...)

Seriously, the polarised views on here just emphasise what a make or break season this is. If we don't get back straight away, then it could be bye bye to the Prem and all that goes with that (good and bad) for a long, long time...
  • i'm already feeling more confident than i was yesterday. :o)
  • Confident?

The sun is shining, not a cloud in the sky - and I've got a 'work from home' day where I'm supposed to be calling important clients. But so far I'm just addicted to the forum....(!)

So I'm happy. And when I'm happy, I'm confident.

    Scunthorpe result? No problem, 3-0.
    Promotion? Absolutely. Champions, 100 points.

Reasoning? The sun is shining and I'm happy.
I'll let you know if it's raining at 5pm on Saturday...... ;-)

Can I have some of what you're on, please, Oggy?

Sun is shining in Glasgow and I too am working/skiving from home...but you're definitely a bit ahead of me in the optimism stakes!
  • Christ...

Some people here are actually suggesting they're going to miss watching the quality of opposition?? WTF are you on? I go to watch Charlton win, it ruins my weekend when we loose. I'm lucky i can pick and choose my games, the ones i didn't used to bother with in the premier league were the likes of the top 4 why on earth would i want to see Henry take the piss, or Chelsea score then sit back on their lead for the remains 60minutes?

At least this season i'll be able to enjoy my weekends a lot more, most excited i've been for a while. Much better banter to be had with Mates supporting Norwich, Ipswich, Sheff Wed, Watford than being patrronised by Spurs and Arsenal fans.

I think Pardew has made some astute signings, and we will be going back up next season where my weekends will again be ruined.

I recon we'll take Scunthorpe apart saturday.

i'll take the feeling of a 4-2 win at highbury, and the 1-0 win at old trafford years ago over anything i've ever seen in the second tier by miles and miles and miles......obviously play off games which we won were out of this world but you can keep your 5-0 victories every week in the championship against a bunch of nobodies i wanna see MY TEAM mixing it with the best!!
  • good to see some optimistic posts finally! i echo those posts.. we have a good enough squad to take this league by storm.

and whoever cunningstunt is can you please F*** off toFulham or some other moderatly priced family club because you aint welcome here... you're life must be a shambles the amount of time you sit on here criticising when you aint even a proper fan just a johnny come lately..
  • Looking forward to Saturday big time, Scunny will be well up for it to start with but I expect us to eventually run out 3-0 winners. I am even gonna have a bet on it as I really fancy that score & I never bet on Charlton.
