Centre half suggestion

edited August 2007 in General Charlton
Not a progressive one i must admit, but i'm a bit worried with Diawara looking like going, we're a bit light at centre half. Also a bit worried we could possibly do with another 'leader' in the squad, a good squad man others respect day in day out. Can only really see Powell, MacCarthy and Holland fitting in that category.

Currently without a club and training on his own is Kenny Cunningham. Old now, and pretty slow, but positionally sound, reads the game well, great experience and a good calm head. Knows the area well as lived in Welling when at Millwall.

Worthy as a short-term cover, or am i looking for a cheap short-term fix ?

  • Wouldn't want Cunningham and McCarthy in the same side.

A "Lisbie like" striker would have them for breakfast pacewise.

Yes a cheap short term fix but probably worth it in the absence of anything better.

What's happening with Harry Worley? Not that he did much when he came on.
  • think you've finally flipped AFKA. Replace Diawara with Chris Riggott imo. Young, Pl experience, ggod player, available for around 1.5m.
  • dunno mate short-term fix i reckon. disappointed in diawara as i thought given more time he could turn out to be a top-drawer defender but as many people have said and i agree with...if you dont wanna play for charlton then leave. dont really think cunningham is the answer...i think fortune can fill the void in this division well enough. never really thought of diawara as a leader though i must admit.
  • see from SkySports that Diawara is happy to take a drop in his agrred wages with Bordeaux to fund the deal and is just sitting around waiting to get on the plane to go and is getting fed up. Ahhh..

LOL, i'm just working on the basis of a cheap back up cover. We have no youth centre half coming through who could be pushed on. We only have 3 fit centre halves as far as i can see, and that's not healthy.
  • good shout Riggott large, i rate him decent little player, and can score too! as we well no i believe 2-2 draw at the riverside??
  • if hes available riggott would be a good investment i reckon. still more concerned about centre mid.
  • i'd also be happy with Riggott. But judging by the lack of action in the past few weeks, and the clear failure to get a number of deals 'over the line', we're obviously not the most attractive catch being banded around at the moment....
  • Worley - has he played a proper game - ie 1st team. If not then how is he the answer even short term.

Riggott is a good player yes.

What about senderos at Arsenal on loan
  • Craig Moore seemed to tighten up Toon's defence but they let him go for nowt. Boro let Christie go, another crock I know but got goals in him and perhaps a loan from the Gooners, Song, Flamini or whoever they deem is surplus.

    If only!
  • Ketters would do a job!( if he is not DJing that is!)
  • If Chris Perry hadn't been swayed by the bright lights of Luton i'd say he'd be ideal. Shame Souley didn't make his mind up a little earlier really.

    S.
  • Cunningham? No way...not better than anything we've got at the club and I'd sooner someone from the youth team like Tanska was given a game if we are that short.

I would have like Carl Hoefkens, but he's just signed for WBA.
  • Hoefkens is a right back though, isn't he ?
  • Academic as he's gone to WBA but I thought he was a RB who could play CB as and when.

Cheers Best mate, would only be interested if we played as a pair though.

Meanwhile back on planet earth, surely we would be ok for a couple of weeks whilst scouring the market for a new centre half, plus isn't Semedo one ?
  • Semedo and Faye offer cover at CB.

  • But then we'd need to worry even more about centre mid...

Faye FFS - the only cover he offers is for behind the burger bars
  • Come on he didn't do a bad job when he played at CB last season. it was when he played in midfield that he looked out of the game.
  • I think we are being well harsh on Faye, he wasn't a total disaster or by no means as much of a flop as people are making out. He had a couple of shaky games and everyone got on his back and his confidence plummeted. At this level he will be valuable, and he did play bloody well at centre half when we needed him to.

Start of the season I had him down as our best signing so did a lot of others

Well remembered, Carter. It was Newcastle away that did his confidence - he had a 'mare. Obviously brought back a lot of bad memories. Before that he'd been OK in centre mid, and even after that he still did OK at centre half. (Not sure that Pards is all that keen on him, though.)
  • Mirror today reckon Worley coming in on season loan
  • I know Worley is big but is he mobile and pacy?

What do those people sunning themselves at the Braga match think of his 20 minutes?

I thought he looked clumsy and a bit lost, to be honest. Hard to tell in 20 mins though.
  • tbh he didnt really do much when he came on but he didnt need to, so theres not that much we can take from that game. chelsea boys seem to like him though..
  • How about playing Marus at the back? He played there for Port Vale and he cant be any worse than he is up front.
