  • Surely we could move to a diamond like Bows?

Have cov at the base, then Taylor and Doc with Benz up top?

It would maybe help with the midfield getting out fought each game, you’d drop Gillespie for the spare man
    Who is “Benz”?

    I'd presume he meant Berry

Taylor was deeply unimpressive on the rare occasions he played last season, albeit that was in a struggling side and when he was often just back from injury.

He certainly was nothing like the player that was described when he signed and that played for Burton.

But then again neither were Kirk or McGrandles.

The team is currently struggling for creativity and for a dead ball taker yet despite a good game in what was a reserve side v Cambridge in the BSMT he remains just about the only senior squad member not to even get a place on the bench for a league game.  REG got a start on the back of the game but Taylor was ignored.

That suggests that something is amiss or that he just doesn't fit the profile that Jones likes.  NJ seems quite fixed on what he does and doesn't like and if you don't match that then you don't get a look in.

That's great when the team is winning but when we're not and NJ is making constant changes, even to the defence which has been our strongest part of the team, the total omission of Taylor seems odd but then Jones' team selection over the past three or four game has been odd.

The way we set up with five defenders and a defensive midfielder in Coventry means we have six predominately defensive players and four attack minded one.

The wing backs are meant to give us width join the attack but that has rarely happened because the midfield doesn't find them in the final third and while Gas works hard and battles centre backs he's not stretching them due to his lack of pace and he's not dominating in the air.  The other forwards and Gas haven't clicked as a partnership either. Campbell has done well running at defenders but often too wide and too isolated. Godden has shown he can score goals when give the service but that has rarely happened.

Can Taylor feed the wingbacks higher up the pitch?  Maybe.

Can he slot passes in for the front runners and other midfielders to run into the box with?  Perhaps.

Can he take better set pieces that we are currently seeing?  You'd think so given how poor they have been but it remains to be seen.
To be honest, think little unfair, he come in to us injured, and was injured fairly early on, we haven't had little opportunity to see him play, or has he to show us what he can do..

Sometimes for whatever reason doesn't work at some clubs, I think might be the case with Taylor.. The little I have seen of him play, has been enough to tell me, he is half decent footballer, and certainly a lot better than Kirk and McGrandles.
I am better than them two, and that's saying something.

  • McGrandles is still managing some injury issues but he's played 4 games so far for Lincoln this season, hasn't lost one yet and they sit 3rd in the league playing a 352. He's a decent player, even started to look much better under Appleton before he got injured again. When a player is good everywhere he goes except for us it's probably an us issue.
I find that worrying and depressing in equal measure.
"Us" in this context is open to interpretation, is it a management or ownership issue? The fans?
In the case of McGrandles, when he eventually scored for us he looked like he would rather shit on his mother than celebrate with the fans.
Now, I can understand players getting upset if they are targeted for fan abuse, but I wouldn't have thought Charlton fans are any different to other clubs in this context.
In fact we always had a reputation for lacking passion compared to the hostility at some clubs.
Maybe we just buy players that lack a pair?
I don't know, just wondering aloud

You never really know what's going on with players I guess. Chuks has been told not to look on social media because if he gets hurt people will start talking about how he needs to be medically retired but he doesn't seem to have anything against us. McGrandles got some pretty harsh treatment and I guess it got to him. He already had a bad start that wasn't his fault because Garner decided he didn't rate Dobson and planned for McGrandles to replace him. Not McGrandles' fault but it started him off on the wrong foot and then he got injured, was rushed back barely fit and looked off the pace every time (like Taylor last season) so he got a fair bit of grief for not looking up to it. Maybe he reads everything about himself or maybe he just found moving to Charlton and then always being hurt and never playing hard, couldn't settle and wanted out. I don't think our fans are particularly nasty compared to others so much as it's probably a modern problem where social media means a narrative can spring up about a player that turns a lot of people's minds and players can see what's written about them and potentially get upset about it if there's enough of it.
Plus Leuth is right, we're definitely cursed
  • I think it’s an ownership and SLT problem. All these players like McGrandles, Dobson, Lee, May and O’Connell have been moved on but seem to be excelling for other teams or at least keeping up very good form. Those players are across different ownership and SLTs but it shows not much has changed. Yes NJ is a better coach, but his recruitment seems lopsided. You also need a good team around a manager and remember, this current SLT hired Appleton and moved on Dobson and May (both to top of table teams). These clowns really don’t know what they’re doing. Charlie has form, he was part of the SLT at Sunderland that off loaded their star striker to overpay on Will Grigg, sound familiar?

    Benz = Benzema.

    He’s joining us in January.
  • Have no idea why he has been ghosted by Jones.
  • I'm starting to think he won't ever start a game for us in the league until the manager changes.
  • Why doesn’t Lious Mendez or Terry etc ask about TT to Nathan Jones? Not digging them out just a genuine question

So in about 3 games time then
  • Was really good today, clearly flagging at the end but to be expected. Now we're back to the "Can CC and TT play together?" debate. Personally, I think at the base of a box they can. Doc might even look better up there next to Anderson, his physicality would suit that role

Wont be surprised to see Coventry back in the starting eleven ahead of Taylor on Tuesday.

TT hasnt had many minute in a long time, so need to ensure we dont break him - We've also got Chelsea U21s and Bromley coming up in the EFL Trophy soon - Different type of games, but both are free hits to see if those two can play together.
  • I think that's the next step IMO, Campbell hasn't really looked good enough so far.

Maybe a 4312 with Doc, Taylor and Coventry all behind a man in the free role. (I'd prefer it to be Berry but I'd imagine NJ sticks with Anderson)

Agree that he won't play Tuesday, actually typed out "Tuesday will come too soon for him" but deleted as would expect to get pelters on here from some for saying pro footballers need to rest.

The partnership definitely feels like a good idea against teams who are happy to give up the ball.

We would have lots of options in that 1. Anderson, Berry, A Campbell potentially and then when chasing the game TC & Dixon

Docherty has looked poor further forward. I’d just leave him out and play Berry
  • Some pretty decent set plays today.

In a midfield 3 I would agree, in the box we play you want someone aggressive who presses relentlessly and that isn’t Berry
  • When was the last time our fanbase overhyped a player that wasn’t playing, and it turned out they weren’t overhyping him at all?
I’m not sure he was overhyped, more just a lot of felt the midfield wasn’t playing that well or looking balanced and couldn’t understand why we weren’t giving a player who, supposedly had the skill set we might be missing, a bit of a chance to show if he could improve us.

Great to see him take his opportunity today. He was very good.
  • Set plays are so important, and we've had absolutely nothing in that department for far too long.
Today we could, and should have scored from at least two of his deliveries.
  • Thought he was excellent . Have to find a way to fit him and CC in together in my opinion. A Campbell and Anderson flattering to deceive, especially the latter
