Help please - hardware issue (I think) when streaming from laptop to TV

Hopefully someone will recognise this issue

when streaming, the screen goes a little darker for a few seconds, regularly. So it means that in night scenes on a series like Tokyo Vice, the room goes darker, the faces a little harder to discern. Or when watching Charlton TV, Manni Egbo’s rather natty cream sweater occasionally turned a darker shade. 

It’s a pretty new Mac laptop connected to a hub, and from the hub, an HDMI cable to the TV. It’s not, unfortunately, the cable, as I tried another with the same result. Spraying WD40 on the connections didnt help. If it’s the hub that’s a problem as it wasnt cheap. I’d need to get it tested somewhere. However if it is displaying a static page from the  browser on the TV Screen everything looks rock steady. It’s just the video streaming which seems to be a problem. Last night I kept an eye on the laptop screen and it did not darken when the TV screen did. So it does not seem to be the laptop. I use the VPN to watch Tokyo Vice, but not Charlton Tv, and the internet speed is pretty decent, so I don’t think it’s that. TV is new too, and seems to be fine on Netflix, etc

Can anyone suggest any other possible things to check? Thanks!

    Sounds like a power saving setting struggling with the light.

    Some MacBooks have a light sensor to dim the screen when it's bright. Check you haven't got adaptive brightness on.

    Could also be a auto HDR thing

    Sounds like a HDR issue to me. I've been having the same issue whilst streaming on my LG TV. I've tried numerous fixes and none of them have worked for me, will be buying a new TV when it gets too annoying.

    Previously with the Valley Pass App used to watch Charlton matches previously, when Chromecasting to my TV, sometimes the picture on the TV would be too dark.

    The only answer would be to break the connection and connect again.

    No idea if this is relevant, but your comment did remind me about this!

    Have you tried tried connecting the laptop straight to the tv? What is the purpose of the hub?

    It’s an apple product, it needs 33 adapters to connect it to anything….

    sounds sounds like your laptop has adjusted its settings for how it is most frequently used and optimised them for pornhub

    you should be able to cast the pic from your laptop to the TV. see if that gives the same issue

    1st are you mirroring your Mac screen to the tv? If so follow these steps: https://mashable.com/article/how-to-turn-off-mac-adjust-screen-brightness-level

    Don't have a Mac, but I connect my laptop directly to my TV via an HDMI cable with no problems

    Guessing a USB-C hub?

    Does your TV not have airplay? Should be able to wirelessing broadcast. How to Get Airplay on LG Smart TVs in 2023 (Easy) - Tag Vault

    Thanks for the comments, going to try some of these new ideas, especially Airplay, which I was trying to figure out last night. Will report back

    You can get a suitable lead for the HDMI slot on the MacBook. Top on the right.

    I think it might be this that you need to do. Quite straight forward.

    Stop the MacBook Pro and MacBook Screen from Dimming (osxdaily.com)

    So it looks like it's fixed, here is what I did:

    - altered settings in the MacBook. That didn't work, and I wasn't surprised because the problem doesnt appear when I watch the stream on the laptop screen
    - altered settings in the LG TV, turned off energy saver and selected Standard light. That didn't work, although the brighter screen made the lowlight scenes more watchable

    So then I tried Airplay, and...that works. Problem not visible.

    So, that means the hub, (a USB-C hub that cost €50) is faulty, right? I just checked and it's less than 2 years old, so I might be able to get a refund. But before I do that does everyone agree with my conclusion (I tried a different HDMI cable and got the same problem so I eliminated that variable)

    And thanks as always, pretty obscure problem solved.
