Post-Match Thread: Charlton Athletic vs Lincoln City | 7/1/23

edited January 2023 in General Charlton
Only four fixtures in League One today, presenting Charlton with a chance to move up the table against an out-of-form Lincoln City. Charlton got off to a slow start, but a fragile Lincoln failed to capitalise on their early pressure. Charlton grew into the game and, by twenty minutes in, were in full control. Corey Blackett-Taylor applied pressure down the left, with Scott Fraser pulling the strings. Miles Taylor applied himself in pressurising their back line. Our account was opened when Miles crossed the ball in from the right to find Fraser the flying Scotsman’s head (35’). Corey Blackett-Taylor fashioned his own goal not long after by attacking down the left on a break and blasting past the keeper with his left foot (42’).

In the second half Charlton had more chances to go ahead. Conditions began to worsen and we, true to usual form, allowed an equaliser that gave the hapless Lincoln a lifeline (76’).

Somehow the referee found it necessary to add seven minutes in stoppage time, which ended up running to more than eight and a half, all played in torrential rain and high winds. Nonetheless, we saw out the win and collected another necessary three points. We find ourselves swinging back into the top half of the table, sitting high in twelfth and seven points off of seventh.

Back-to-back wins see Charlton with a little momentum heading into the League Cup tie at Old Trafford.

Charlton 2 Lincoln 1

Over to you.

  • 2 wins on the spin, looked dominant for the majority of the game and had so many chances to go ahead but our concentration seemed to drop and they got back in the game to make it nervy, still momentum continues.
  • 2 wins on spin and unlike Portsmouth good performance this time.100% in 2023 could be our year 😀COYR
  • Wasn't there but any win is good in this League.......getting them back-to-back is even better.

Get to 45 points by end of Feb & we can relax. Might even be able to dream of a play off place if we can stay unbeaten this month.
  • We are not very good at defending goal mouth scrambles are we, opponents always seem to get the shots off. Must have conceded countless goals this season with our players panicking and running into each other. Why is it so stressful watching us with 15 minutes to go?
  • Table looks a lot better tonight
  • Well, well, well Dean Holden has a good win rate.
What a manager, hope he lasts 😆

  • A win is all that matters. Don't care whether it's deserved or lucky. Points not style are what keeps a team up or gets a team up.

Hoping for some new faces (of quality) through the door to give Holden a pleasant selection headache.
  • Only followed on the match thread and Sky. Both goals were well taken and deserved a HT lead. Looked fairly comfortable in the second half until subs were made. Kirk and Paine failed to continue the good work that the players they subbed. Didn't hear any comments about how O'Connell did when coming on.
As said, a win is a win, so onwards are upwards.
  • Outstanding display in the first half... Fully deserved our lead going into the break, only complaint was the fact that we could / should have been further in front - We certainly look more direct (not long ball) when we have the ball, and we look like we're trying to do something with it, rather than passing for the sake of it.

Understandably I thought we managed the second half, could / should have got a third, even fourth goal but just wouldnt go into the net - Lincoln then got their goal, and the whole momentum of the game swung into their favour.

Had they grabbed an equaliser then it would have been beyond harsh, but thankfully didnt happen.

The midfield of Morgan | Dobson | Fraser appears to be working once again, just hope the former doesnt rest on his laurels as we've seen so often - Especially as the game did change when Albie went off, partly because he's one of our better players at the press when off the ball

Was a massive bonus seeing O'Connell back in the side, hadn't overly paid attention to the bench when the line-up was announced so was a nice surprise when he came on after the long lay off - He looked calm and assured coming straight back into the action

Shame starting alongside Inniss, and Ness (who continues to impress) might be just too soon for Tuesday.
  • 2 wins on the spin

  • Let's face it nobody wants to get dropped for the united game so not exactly surprised they put in shift in today.

    Not complaining though!

Overall I thought we played a lot better against Portsmouth than we did today.
    That's because we did.
  • A vast majority mentioned he is completely clueless?

Not as stressful as it is for our defenders with 15 minutes to go.

  • Our defending still looks shakey against a poor team. Made heavy westher of that but a win is a win.

Good win, earlier in the season we would have conceded a second goal in the 2nd half. As a team played well.
