There is no question that our 7-6 win against Huddersfield in 1957 (65 years ago this weekend) is the greatest match ever. To come back from 5-1 down with 10 men and then to win in the dying seconds will never be equalled let alone beaten. No other professional match in British history has ever seen a team score 6 goals and lose. A national newspaper named it the greatest match in the last millennium. The match ball is displayed in the Charlton Museum, so be proud of your club's achievements, especially when we are currently so much in the doldrums.
All of the greatest games in retrospect don’t have the sort of analysis that looks into “the first 20 minutes” or “it was a bit stale after the break”.
In 30 years time, people won’t care about that granular detail. It will be about the goals, the superstar names, the iconic images, the historical context - and the fairytale ending.
And if you base it on those ‘romantic’ elements, it’s right up there.

Hmm, do you not think that there's a charm to international football: can't buy players (on the whole), only train together a few weeks a year, few games a year, relatively little money, playing for pride? I think it is quite pure.
Definitely the best WC final I have seen, and my first was 1974, but not the best game. Liverpool 4-3 Newcastle was the best game I've seen on TV. Best live game was the first play off v Sunderland.

If there are 100 games that are better than that, then they certainly wouldn’t have carried anywhere near the gravitas going into it.
