POST-MATCH THREAD | Wycombe Wanderers V Charlton Athletic..Saturday 27th August 2022

edited August 2022 in General Charlton
Charlton started well, applying pressure from the off. We passed slickly between the thirds and, at moments, had Wycombe chasing shadows. We were, however, lackluster in front of goal. The inability to test their defence in the final third left a gap for Wycombe to apply their physicality. On about fifteen minutes, they found a way through on the break, when O’Connell and Dobson switched off and allowed a slicing pass to find a lonesome Wycombe shirt on the six yard line. A decent finish gave the advantage to the home side, against the run of play. With the bit between their teeth, the Addicks kicked off with intent. Within ninety seconds, good team movement found Rak-Saki at the far post, who jigged and jagged before finishing decisively. We went into halftime even.

The referee threatened to let the game get away from him, with seven or so first-half yellow cards brandished for every slight of his perceived authority, including one shown to Ben Garner on the touchline. In the second half, he managed to keep his calm, showing only three yellow cards, mostly for fouls deserving of further punitive measures.

The second half mostly went to the Addicks, who nullified Wycombe’s aggressive, physical play and passed throughout the pitch with hopeful intent. There were a few chances to each side, but nothing that separated the two. 61% possession for the travelling Addicks, but tellingly, only two shots on target. We seemed to wilt in the heat as the matched progressed, which made our inability to threaten in the box even more pronounced.

  • The most bizarre set of opponents to start a season I’ve ever seen

13th (having played a game less than others)
    6th
    3rd
    5th
    7th
    14th

By pure league position, Wycombe were apparently our easiest opponents. And they were play-off finalists in May.

It doesn’t get easier for a couple of weeks either. Next two: Bolton are 10th and Exeter are 9th.
Too early to read too much into league positions. Luck and easier/harder fixtures can distort the picture at this stage. Come October/November then the league table starts to tell a more accurate picture

2 weeks running where a lack of a Plan B has been incredibly evident.

  • Need to get more shots off. Speculate to accumulate.
  • excellent point  least we deserved today second half we controlled it they were only relying on breakaways.
We should have had one if not two pen ..the work rate and team sprit is incredible in this squad so early in the season .

We didn't have a single shot on target second half.
  • They were very average but last 30 minutes, a bit like Sheff Wednesday, We looked tired. Are our fitness coaches worse than Wycombes and Wednesday?

    Have we got one?
  • we struggled against a very depleted Wycombe who had more shots off target and on target. Possession along the back four does nothing for us , other than inviting pressure. we need another good experienced forward and a another mobile centreback.

  • 61% possession and 2 shots on target...mind you Wycombe only had 4 on target, so good point for both sides i think, match was a midfield tussle with neither side really deserving anything more than a point,,..so onto Bolton next week..wonderful.. B)
  • I doubt it. Every second ball was lost last 30 mins. Some good tackles and defending but too static which meant we had limited threat. Payne was not good when he came on. leaburn looked like a kid. Clayden was decent but lacks that extra bit that he will probably get at some point.
  • It's not happening.

I’d say six games is enough to start getting a picture. Even the most negative among us can’t make the point that they all got their points from us either because we’re 8th ourselves.
