Isn't the official attendance supposed to be "all tickets issued" i.e. all season tickets, tickets sold, promotion/marketing freebies (like yesterday) and complimentary tickets? Physical attendance is another matter completely and never revealed.
I guess this is down to the UK tax laws and what constitutes the taxable income for the match although it would be nice to know exactly how many people were actually in the stadium instead of having the gate inflated by non-appearing ghosts.
I remember a number of years ago going to an AFL match at Subiaco Oval and there was a number in the bottom corner of the scoreboard that was going up and up and up: that was the attendance and was linked to the turnstiles so whenever anyone entered the stadium the counter went up. The gate would always be confirmed in the final quarter as it wouldn't be unusual for people still to be coming in after half time.
