Predicting football scores is a strange business. For the Prediction League, I almost always make my predictions on Friday morning. It gives me enough time to dissociate myself from the fixtures I have chosen on a Tuesday or Wednesday. Sometimes, I look at the games and think "he's chosen a horrible lot of games this week". Some weeks, the three games that I pick are made within seconds. On other weeks, I check league tables, check the current form of each team and even look at goals scored at home and away by each team. I try to avoid changing my mind. If a result comes into my mind, I stick with it. I never have second thoughts. Except, last week. I knew Bolton would beat Wycombe. I tend to pick low scores, so 1-0 jumped into my head. Then, I decided it might be 2-0. Finally, I decided it could well be 3-0. I fell back on my rule of sticking with my original scoreline. Of course, Bolton won 3-0. My 1-0 prediction still gave me a point in the Prediction League, but it felt like two wasted points. Whether this diatribe helps you or leaves just as befuddled as ever, I don't know.
