Blason Populaire - no not a new striker.

But a linguistic genre of which English football chants and inter-club rivalry are now probably the most common examples.

It seems years ago much abuse and ridicule was handed out between rival villages, towns and counties.  So, for example, Yorkshire Tykes was once a derogatory term (but is now worn as a badge of honour).

Anyway here is a link to a thesis on the subject, which thanks Charlton Athletic, among others, for their assistance.  https://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/12799/1/489131.pdf  There is a suggestion that what we would now call wokeness may eventually be the end for Blason Populaire, which would be a shame in my opinion.

I found it an interesting (skim) read. Who knew that the residents of Strood were once known as Kentish Longtails?  Enjoy or not as the case might be.

  • Thanks.  Good to know that it is in fact our erudition that it is being expressed when we reference the stripy Nigels and the Scum.
  • Enjoyed that
