Wynton Rufer (not an RIP)

Does the name Wynton Rufer resonate with anyone? If you know anything about football in NZ you know this name. But I wonder how well known he is still overseas? I had a work lunch with him today and among other things we were talking about Maradona. Wynton casually said he’d played against him in the CL and scored for Werder Bremen knocking out Napoli over two legs. I was a little bit in awe.

I’ve always wondered why he hasn’t played a greater role in NZ football.  European footballer of the year for heavens sake.  I presume he was at odds with the powers that be.  His son is a good player, not as good as his Dad though.

If you are talking about Alex Rufer that’s in fact his nephew.
