Former University Challenge presenter and author Bamber Gascoigne has died aged 87, his representatives have confirmed.

Gascoigne was the original presenter of the quiz show from 1962 to 1987.

    He was a master of his craft. It wasn’t his fault the show was skewed towards oxbridge arts students.

    Apart from your name on the inside cover, thanks for not ruining the book with underlining, notes, crossing outs and doodles.

    Oh really. Not that I’d thought much about bamber for a while, have no idea how old he was, but a part of the fundament. RIP

    even today when the credits roll on U C, I still expect to hear .. 'asking the questions .. Bamber Gascoigne' .. although Jezza has been doing the honours for a couple of decades, Bamber was still the U C man most associated  .. R I P

    Sad news. Like others I still expect to hear his name mentioned. Think he used to write a lot of the questions himself back in the day. Very clever man. RIP

    Back in the day, Bamber took a girlfriend to watch a movie. When the lights went down he unzipped his fly and guided the willing participant's hand towards the opening. She gasped and said "is that all you've got". He replied "don't worry, it's your starter for 10".

    Even though I was only a kid and couldn't answer any of the questions, I still loved watching UC.

    RIP....loved his condescending retorts to the toffs. Distinctive voice and unforgettable first name.

    He was the egg head Quiz master.
    His Aunt left him that big house in Richmond that was used in the TV series Ghosts.
    One man who was always in charge and apparently always at peace in life so 
    RIP should be quite straight forward.
