My father wasn't a gambler. For some inexplicable reason before one game, he offered me a whole two shillings if I could predict the result of Charlton's game against Sunderland and sixpence if I got the right number of goals. I knew that Sunderland would be a tough game, so I wisely chose a close result. I opted for 1-0 to Charlton. At half-time, it was still 0-0. "Charlton won't score if they play for another two hours", he advised me. He offered me the chance to change my prediction. Being a confident young lad, I refused and stuck with 1-0. Sure enough, with a few minutes left, a Charlton player was set free down the middle - I have to confess I have forgotten who it was - for some reason, I think it was Dennis Edwards, but I may be wrong. As Edwards (or whoever) rounded the keeper, I gave a knowing look at my Dad as I waited for the net to bulge. I threw my arms in the air only to realise that the ball had gone into the side netting. I was gutted. It ended 0-0, of course. I didn't speak as we walked homewards up Church Lane and Wellington Gardens.

That game would be Dec 7th 1963. I thought it was Roy Matthews who missed . Eddie Firmani would have scored but for a superb backwards and sideways leap to is right post by the bar. A terrific save. A week later we drew at home 2-2 with Southampton.
I think you could be right about Roy Matthews, @addick1956. It's strange how you remember more about games nearly 50 years ago than what happened two weeks ago.
