I'm not saying he is the new messiah but anyone who cannot see that the Gilby that finished last season would not improve us at the moment is either blind or deluded
He certainly isn't the new messiah although some seem to talk about him as though he is.
He would improve us but that is from a very low base. We cannot just assume that Gilbey will score the goals that we desperately need, as you still need someone to supply the ball into the box for him to finish. Hopefully, Kirk will be that supplier because it won't be Dobson or Clare.
Albie is the only one of the current midfield with an eye for a pass but I'm sure that he would be the one to make way for Gilbey.

What does DJ bring? I always laughed when people suggested he’d tear the league a new one because he had a few decent pre season games. He has been bang average whenever I have seen him - we need better as he won’t be scoring or creating many goals.
    The pre-match music.

Edit: Oooooops, I see Elfsborg beat me to it.
  • Lol.
When your centre half is your best dribbler you know you are in trouble.

I don’t know about anybody else who went to yesterday’s first away game in a while but I’m exhausted today. I need to get match fit.
    Same.

Just the ballache of getting out of the ground and back to the train station was exhausting.

Great away day though up until the game itself.
That depends on who analyses the formation.  On Fotmob they make strange errors.  442 is often 4411 and 433 can be 4321.

    Which teams were they ?
    You OK?

I think that’s probably a misquote to formation posts earlier in the thread.

Too many double negatives. I actually have no idea what you are saying other than that anyone who disagrees with you is blind or delusional. I don't want to be either of those so if you could be a bit clearer so that I can avoid falling into error that would be great.
  • I was always confused when Clare signed - a bit part player at Oxford didn’t really stand out as building a promotion winning side. It would make sense if a top league one midfielder were to arrive and he becomes a squad player / cover.

It makes some sort of sense in that he is young, ish, and can improve.  He was probably perceived to be under valued by his current club.  He has got "something about him" but he is far from the finished article.

Reminds me, a bit, of Bonne in terms of where he is at.

He made five appearances in midfield for Chef Wendy in the Championship back in 2017-18, scoring one goal. They were keen to offer him a new deal too but he chose to reject  it, believing he could get a better deal elsewhere. A rumoured move to Swansea fell through and he signed with Hearts.

He is clearly talented and just because he was mishandled by Oxford for a year isn’t a reason to dismiss him after two league appearances for us. Let’s see how he’s doing by October-November time. He had a stinker yesterday but I still believe there’s a decent player in there.

Sean Clare scores a well taken goal to put Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 up over Aston Villa in February 2018. They went on to lose 2-4.

  • Gilbey scores his fair share of goals. Put that in a midfield that scores zilch and you pose new questions. It becomes harder to supress the threat because there are more threats. Dobson's job is not to score goals, but in the 4-3-3, the other two need to know where the goal is.

He’s nearly 25 and whilst players have been late developers before, he isn’t that young.

Personally I was just hoping we would have a centre of midfield that is (in league one terms) a bit more wow this year.

Last two promotions we have had from this level:

    1) Hollands, Stephens, Jackson etc

    2) Cullen, Bielik, Aribo

I think we are agreed we need out of this league pronto and it doesn’t feel like we are at this level in midfield so far at all.

  • I was hoping Morgan would step up and become the player a lot of us think he can be. That could still happen but is looking less likely for this season at least.

I said in the week that id like to see us play 4-4-2 as it doesn’t just rely on hopeful balls forward. And if we end up doing that cos our midfield is so shit, then at least there will be players close to Stockley in that system. However, signing Kirk who plays best in a 4-3-3 says to me that Adkins is sticking to his guns and won’t change the system. If that’s the case then he needs to change the approach. An attacking left back is required, along with telling Matthews he is allowed to cross over the half way line. We need another CAM that gets close to Stockley and can hit the target and Dobson/Clare have to be encouraged to want the ball from the back 4. So two very important first X| signings required in the next week or so. Then add 3 decent players that can come off the bench.
I recall a game last season under Bowyer where we started with 4-4-2 and had to change after about 20 minutes as the midfield were being completely overrun. Not saying it would be wrong to try it but I can't see Dobson and Clare fairing much better. Though why we didn't change to it yesterday after bringing on Davison I don't know. Sticking him on the right was pointless.
I'd rather win some games than none at all.
  • Gilbey in place of Clare.  You suddenly add a goal threat and another player opponents have to cater for.
Gilbey has a grand total of three (3) goals for us. He has averaged 2-3 goals a season over his career.

3 in 23 games amounts to about 6 per season. At the end of last season he looked capable of improving on that scoring 2 with a strong ratio if anybody wants to work it out.
  • I wonder if Adkins thinks sod this I am off? The guitar dude promised him the world and we got Clare in? Etc etc. He won’t need the money and then we would be in a bigger hole !
  • I actually think Clare and Dobson are good on the ball, but they've been poor off it. It's better this way round I guess! I can't help but think that Bowyer would have possibly been a good manager to sort them out.

Gilby will presumably come in for Clare, but I wouldn't be surprised to see more of Watson for Dobson too.

I've said it before, but TS is most likely looking for players with sell on value. If Clare and Dobson do well this season, they'll be sold or offered longer deals. He seems to be more convinced by Kirk, hence the 4 year deal.

Under Adkins Gilbey scored 3 in 9.  If he missed 10 games this season that would put him either in, or very close to double digits.
  • The debate over formations is spurious in many ways because as we found in the WC with Luke Shaw, you can be listed as a LB in a 4 at the back but he was a major attacking element for England with the most assists and his goal in the final should have propelled England to glory.

Relationships on the football field are paramount and when teams play well the pass and movement and link up play with the ball should be seem less so whatever formation is listed,
4-4-2/4-2-3-1/3-5-2/ ??? It should never be so rigid when a team is in possession that it's easy to stifle for the defence. Man city were toothless yesterday but they had six different players attacking in and around the box !

Charlton are so undercooked at the moment, I stated we would draw all our League games in August; as the focus would be on a solid defense for Cafc( I want 25 clean sheets, NA quote) But defensive mistakes and sharp Oxford play with delivery and goal poaching put paid to that.

At the moment, every ones under performing for CAFC with no link up relationships being developed on the field.

Nigel Adkins will dictate the Tactics, and his coaches work to that template. The buck stops with the manager. Harsh at times, but if Nigel see Stockley as a lone striker, I strongly disagree. I so want the team and Nigel to be a success as NA is a top bloke and his philosophy on life is great.

I don't think it's come from TS; he'd have been advised that Kirk was worth a four year deal. League One is new to him, so he'd have had no idea who Kirk was.
  • I think the comparisons to Bielik and Cullen are a little unfair. We didn’t really know much about either before they were loaned in and both have now pushed on in their careers. We have time to bring in Premier League club loans, but they have to be the right fit for this level and not Levitt and Smith standard.

We don't know what Levitt's standard was. He was adjudged our best player by Charlton Life in his first game and played about twice more
In the 2-0 defeat by Lincoln? He was a little bit less shit than the rest. I’d like to see loans in that can compete for starting positions, not just sit on the bench. They need to be ready for the physicality of league one football.
  • Went on Saturday, surprised by the pelters Morgans getting, seeing as he was pretty much a one man midfield but what do I know.  Dobson didnt make even a sideways pass all day let alone a forward one and Clare was anonymous apart from one backheel to Washington.

No width at all was the issue for me.  Washington naturally tucks in and they did a good job of nullifying DJ.  Full backs were exposed in behind if they went forward.

Nice to be shouting at the ref in person rather than  the telly but other than that a crap day all round.

Still trying to work out how that bloke with the roof box got in the car park in the first place.  Well done whoever cut the tape to open the barrier so we could all get out.

We don't really know how good either Matt Smith is either, although one is playing in the championship and we aren't.
