Will absolutely get Championship interest over the summer. We need to convince him we're going places.

He certainly puts a few other defensive midfielders we've recently had into context
Partly because the people we have used as defensive midfielders aren't really defensive midfielders and have ended up playing there by default.

    He is a specialist
  • Play George as the midfield anchor and he is the best at that job in the league. The times he has struggled with us and at Sunderland have been when he has been asked to play in the Gilbey role, box to box and providing creativity is not his forte.

Screening the defence is his strength and he is bloody good at it. My POTY atm with Gilbey a close second.
  • Yes, I guess Big Dazza's role was Destroyer Of Worlds rather than anything so subtle as 'defensive midfielder'
  • I'd agree he's POTY so far - sticks to players like sh*t to a blanket and has good awareness and vision - a real asset

Gilbey not remotely close for me. Dobson by an absolute street.

Pratley didn't play there when he was younger though did he?

I don't know if its something to do with academies, or something else, but generalist midfielders seem to be like rocking horse shit, it limits the way teams can play and you still end up with players doing "a job".

I think AG is criminally underrated by our fans tbh. He is brilliant.
Agreed - He's deceptively quick and carries the ball better than anyone.

Yes, which is exactly what I said in my post that apparently can't be replied to

TBH they are both irreplaceable, without Gilbey we are too one paced and a bit ploddy in midfield.

IMO Dobson, Gilbey and JFC would be an outstanding league 1 midfield.  Gilbey should play as the most advanced, he is at his best when he can run past the strikers.

Wasn’t there once a song called ‘Hey there Georgie girl’?
Is it well known, could it be adapted?
Or we get George adapted and have his tackle cut off?
  • Caveat: Gilbey did completely dominate and destroy Ipswich that one time. Showed a few more strings to the bow than usual that game. But generally he's a running and dribbling machine whose passing and tackling is probably inferior to the average League One standard
  • I really like AG, but the fact is that he doesn't (well hasn't to date) score or create enough goals. He clearly has the ability, and Saturday's run for the second goal is what he should be doing more of.

That was a fresh Gilbey against a tired defence (pushing for an equaliser), which is why he was particularly incisive. As I say, an option we should explore more.

    I agree with you CEL.
Anyone who was at the Ipswich home game for Alex Gilbey's master class missed a treat. After Dobson, Gilbey would always be the next name on the sheet.

I love JJ ( in a football sense !) but I do believe he panicked a tad in dropping Gilbey and when he came on instead of the struggling Lee, the midfield energy and running of Dobson defensively, and the born again athlete that is Morgan chasing every thing down we improved so much and we ended up with a strong 11 on the field with Washington and Gilbey.
The youngster Burstow is a natural goal scorer and is learning his trade in men's football.

i agree - i like Gilbey and think Lee should be rested instead but apparentkly the thinking behind Gilbey being rested for a bit is that he drifts out of games for long spells - not something i've noticed particualrly although he does seem to be able to go up a gear evey now and then
  • Gilbey has qualities are other midfielders lack, mainly his ability to carry the ball.  Against Ipswich he was superb, his best game i've seen for us probably.
However, he doesn't really score (4 in 43 games for us), doesn't assist and is pretty poor without the ball. Our worst culprit at giving away stupid fouls when the opposition isn't going anywhere. Overall I like him, but 'criminally underrated' is absurd to be honest.

3 of those goals came in the only run in the side as the more advanced of the 3.

    He's very rated.

Imo he's a very good ball-carrier who will run fast at defences all day, a shabby passer, a weak tackler and someone who should never, ever shoot from range, in that order.

I think his skillset is more that of a winger than a CM tbh, except his crossing would probably be even worse than the incumbents'.

Still, his energy and drive is probably a net positive in our side. I strongly feel he isn't good enough to start for a promotion team, but he'd be a great option off the bench, especially to run at tired defences.

Dobson on the other hand is a complete midfielder.
Agree. Gilbey is a good player but his final ball is poor. Even for Morgan's goal on Saturday, there are players free in the box and Gilbs has hit it straight at the defender. Fortunately it has deflected off him and into Morgan's path.

    Dobson
    Stockley
    Gilbey
    Washington
in that order for me (for POTY).
The rest have played well for a few matches, and then gone off the boil (or have struggled with injuries like Inniss).
  • Player of the season by far.
  • When's this lad signing a contract extension? He's brilliant and needs tying down
Might stop him getting around the pitch so much.

Said this last week. Need to get him on a longer deal ASAP.
