  • The man is an absolute imbecile. Kelvin McKenzie threatened to fire him when he was only a sub-ed at The Sun in Wapping and Bushell broke down in tears in front of McKenzie and got on his knees to beg for his job. That's how much pride Garry Bushell has in himself.
  • "only" a sub-editor?
  • Yeah, no offence against any subbies out there, its a thankless task and needs far greater powers of concentration than I can ever muster.

Actually, thinking about it he may not have actually been a subbie, it was actually another more junior role there just after the big move to Wapping.

Point is that he was right at the bottom of the ladder but was apparently a big mouth pain in the backside around the office. So, one day, the legendary Kelvin is strolling the carpets and sees Bushell mouthing off about something and said words to the effect of, "Who's that big mouth fat ++++ (quite an insult from Kelvin), tell him he's sacked."

Apparently, when the news was broken to Bushell he prostrated himself in front of Kelvin and begged not to be sacked, saying his wife and kids depended on his income, until McKenzie, in a rare show of humanity, relented and let him stay.

It took Bushell a while to get back in the good books but he ended up getting back on side with his showbiz/TV stuff and he ended up being a real star at the paper. His writing could occasionally be quite funny but like Richard Littlejohn he is just too one-dimensional.
  • lots of apprently's in there.....
  • No, that's all published in a book on The Sun - Stick It Up Your Punter!: The Uncut Story of The Sun Newspaper by Peter Chippindale and Chris Horrie, a pair of former Sun journos.

That story has also confirmed by Kelvin MacKenzie (correct spelling) on numerous occasions in print and elsewhere and has never been denied by Bushell.
