Imo, for what it's worth, we will never get a better chance than now to regulate our sport. Tracey Crouch, ex sports minister, is leading the " fan led review of football ownership' & governance " Having said that I'm not holding my breath cos as far as I know Boris is not a football fan.
It's too big - obviously - for just one person to manage.
So it seems like they're calling for a kind of national governing body for football in England, responsible for sanctioning competition Rule Books, and regulating all on-field matters.
It will be very difficult to create and staff an entire body like that by the end of the year.

You’re right in saying that BJ is not really a football fan, but the huge following and impact that the game has on British culture and the immense sway it holds in the media won’t be lost on him or other members of parliament, from both sides of the house. It appears that, as feared, the government has cherry picked the recommendations.
Good as far as it goes, but it looks like they've chickened out of tackling the financial inequalities between the Premier League and the rest of the pyramid.
"Crouch's review recommended looking at financial distribution, including "more support from the Premier League to the pyramid through a solidarity transfer levy, paid by Premier League clubs on buying players from overseas or other top-flight clubs".
But the government said it believed "that this should be solved by the football authorities in the first instance".
"It is noticeable and disappointing that there has been no progress on discussions between the football authorities on the redistribution of finances and I share the view of government that this needs to be addressed as a matter of urgency," Crouch added."
Who has faith that the FA/EFL have either the will or the capacity to address the matter? They will presumably continue to do what the owners instruct them to do.
It also seems that the legislation will be delayed and not included in forthcoming Queen’s Speech despite much lobbying and an initial commitment. Deeply disappointing.

It goes against much that was said when the FLR was commissioned. Seems selling off C4 is a higher priority for Dorries and the DCMS.

I hope many other fans across the country will do the same, because at the moment the majority of professional football clubs are just one sale away from potential disaster. It really is not acceptable to have this issue kicked down the road yet again. How many more Burys and Macclesfields will have to be sacrificed before the DCMS develops a sense of urgency?
On Monday 25 April, Sports Minister Nigel Huddleston MP announced that the Government will create an independent regulator for football in England, as called for by this petition.
In a statement to the House of Commons, the Minister confirmed that the Government endorses each of the recommendations of the Fan-Led Review of Football Governance, which published its final report in November. Following the statement, the Minister took questions from MPs.
In the statement, the Minister said that the new regulator will set a license condition on clubs requiring them to consult fans on key decisions. He also said the regulator will establish a new 'owners and directors test' to "ensure that only good custodians and qualified directors can run these vital community assets".
The Government has said it will also:
Take steps to protect clubs' stadia, colours and badges
Call on the Premier League to increase financial support for clubs in lower leagues
Launch a dedicated review of women's football in England
Add the FIFA Women's World Cup and UEFA Women's European Championships to the listed events regime, meaning they will continue to be available on free-to-air television
The Minister said the Government will set out further details of how it plans to implement these changes in a policy document known as a 'White paper', to be published "in the summer".
A long-awaited football white paper, which will include "strong action" for club owners and directors, is set to be released by the government in February.
Culture Secretary Michelle Donelan said on Thursday that the paper would be published in "two weeks time".
Glad you posted that Clive. I listen to a Thursday evening slot on Radio Caroline hosted by a guy called Tim Charles. He's not the slickest presenter but I like his music, and he's a Hammers fan. We correspond from time to time, and he's said that his family had Charlton roots, think his old man was an Addick. So I was pretty alarmed when he started banging on about this article last night. I just read it now, and actually I can't see much wrong with it. Tim mainly seemed to object to the "tax" to pay for the regulator and the "Robin Hood" powers to push more money down the pyramid. I sent him a quick mail and we'll continue over the weekend. But it just goes to show what a tough job it will be to sell this to ordinary fans of FAPL clubs.

Several former footballers have launched a parliamentary petition calling for an independent regulator in English football.
Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher, Rio Ferdinand and Gary Lineker are among 23 ex-players and journalists to undersign an open letter to fans.
They say April's European Super League attempted breakaway demonstrates the need to reform the game's governance.
The petition was signed by more than 20,000 people in its first hour.
For it to be considered for a parliamentary debate, 100,000 signatures are required.

The government says it will establish an independent regulator in football after endorsing recommendations made in the fan-led review into the men's game.
The regulator will have power to sanction clubs in English football who break financial and other rules.
A new owners test will be introduced and legislation will give fans more say in the running of the game.
