Ironically, not long after John le Carre, who was obsessed with him.

Grateful at least that he had nearly 30 years to chew on the failure of the ideology he betrayed this country for.1

RIP. Let's hope you had ample time to mull over the casualties and consequences of your traitorous actions because of slavish devotion to a failed and corrupt ideology.4

Wasnt he one of the Cambridge lot along with Kim Philbey?0

I would have willingly put a bullet into each and everyone of them, given the chance.2

Why do the news channels even give it the time of day? Should have ignored it completely.0

Not defending USSR or Blake, but makes me laugh when people announce ‘communism doesn’t work’ whilst living in a one of the most effective capitalist countries in the world, in which millions live in poverty and you can become fabulously wealthy by being friends with Matt Hancock. But yeah, at least it’s a successful and honest system.soapy_jones said:

"an outstanding professional of special courage and life endurance Throughout the years of his hard and strenuous efforts he made a truly invaluable contribution to ensuring the strategic parity and the preservation of peace on the planet. Our hearts will always cherish the warm memory of this legendary man." If it takes you more than one guess who said this eulogy you may need to stop watching soap operas. 0

Out of interest, do people hate him because he betrayed his country or because he betrayed our country? Are Russian defectors also vermin?1

He gave secrets to a brutal, oppressive, totalitarian regime, he gave the names of MI6 agents to the Soviets, leading in some cases to their capture, torture and death.
This whataboutery and false equivence is pathetic.11

So you don’t have a problem with betrayal in general then. That’s interesting.Henry Irving said:He gave secrets to a brutal, oppressive, totalitarian regime, he gave the names of MI6 agents to the Soviets, leading in some cases to their capture, torture and death.

 No, I didn't.
I did mention a brutal, oppressive regime and torture. By your twisted logic your failure to mention them means you approve of them.
Or shall we not argue like student tankies.0

Why would anyone? It's subjective to the circumstances.
Betraying the North Korean regime or the Nazi party surely would not be bad would they.
Betraying the UK in the context of the cold war = not cricket.
Capitalism at its worst excesses is appalling and we need some kind of calibration but other systems such as communism have and continue to heap misery, poverty and oppression on tens of millions throughout history and today.
Never really hear those who bash capitalism in favour of communism emigrating to communist countries...much more comfortable to promote it from the comfort of western democracies typing on iPhones I suppose.
Very simplistic view my post of course but you get what I mean.10

No idea what student tankies are, but equally no idea why I’m spending a Sunday arguing about a dead spy with Team Little England.2

Because you're free and able to do so.Uboat said:No idea what student tankies are, but equally no idea why I’m spending a Sunday arguing about a dead spy with Team Little England.
Not so sure you would have either been so easily able to so or had the resources to do it within the environment of a totalitarian regime.
You can even call Boris a tosser without fear of some jackbooted soldier kicking your door down at 2.00am.6

How anyone can put on rose tinted glasses when discussing the USSR is beyond me.
Do yourself a favour and watch the excellent 'Death of Stalin' film which is currently on the BBC iPlayer. It is a dark comedy, but it demonstrates precisely the inevitable end result of the naive student wet dream that is Communism.
The perfect irony is that its sympathisers would never have the freedom to criticise under Communism that they enjoy in our admittedly imperfect, Capitalist system.
Anyone attempting to mitigate what Blake did needs their head examining.
He helped evil people do evil things, simple as that. Not only a traitor, but a scumbag by any definition.7

Uboat said:No idea what student tankies are, but equally I now regret starting an argument I'm badly losing about a dead murderer with people who aren't like me so I'll dismiss them as "Team Little England" as that is the best I can offer and "othering" those people makes me right and them wrong.
