Goodbye Horse origins

edited July 2007 in General Charlton
Stokie reckons it originated at Luton away: 'my dad reckons 2 drunk blokes just kept singing it, and nobody wanted to join in. There have been rumors it was started at Brighton too when poilceman fell off an horse, but dad insists this was infact the first time.'

anyone else throw any light on how it came about ?

  • I thought it was at Upton Park, when a copper was not holding onto his steed properly, it got spooked by something and the bobby ended up chasing it down Green Street?
  • i've also heard algarves story.
  • i thought it was when MCS told us he was going to shave off his beard for charity and....

    hold on - thats wrong.
  • I'm fairly sure it was after a Brighton game at the Goldstone many years back .. seem to recall running through a bus station and a couple of Charlton ran into a copper on horseback.

When would that have been though?

The song seems to have been around all my Charlton supporting days, I guess it was late 70s when West Ham were in what was then division two with us?
  • I must be wrong then, because it was when we were sharing with WHU. Probably just fitted in with the occasion. Splodgnessabounds had it as a b-side in the late seventies.
  • Its from brighton for sure heard rthe story a few times

Algarve, you are right about Splodge .. which was a time when we were still going to Brighton on a regular basis

That's when I first heard it - but I thought it was the 9 second Jimmy Melrose game. Obviously it may have been around before that. but that was my first away game so hadn't heard it before.
  • I remember it being sung at West Ham when the horse bolted down Green St but the sung was in common use then.

My brother told me it was Luton away in the mid 70s when it started.

There was a fanzine called Goodbye Horse. Was going to be called 11-10 to the Londoners until I suggested Goodbye Horse. Large was there at the time along with some other people who's name's I forget.

Better than VOTV and it's Fifth Column? I think not.

    Others I remember.

    Remember, Remember
    Addickted
    Lennie Lawrence
    Robin's Report
    VFR - Hi KB
    Anorak Addick
THe one that came out the season before last that I can't remember the name off.
    Valiants Viewpoint
  • VOTV was great but it always seemed more 'professional' than a fanzine - great read though - pity it's still not around.
  • ... Fifth Column was written by a certain Mr Hayes or do I recall incorrectly?
  • Brighton in the 1970's...Definitely, locked on, FACT. A policeman was pulled from his horse during a confrontation. I was there with my dad and got caught up in the middle of it. I was about 14 at the time.

Maybe : - ) It was Henry Irving's fifth column (a joke that the two editors of Remember, Remember where it started didn't get. One asked my why the next column wasn't called the 6th column). I'm stuck with the name now.
  • Ooh, ooh .....Henry Irving!
    Ooh, ooh, Henry Irving!

We used to go up to the Henry Irving statue in the old days.

I was waiting for you to mention that. It was a good fanzine and more humourous that VOTV.

I think the days of the paper fanzines have gone. Charlton Life is the new Goodbye Horse.
  • I think you are right on the money there Henry. And with so many more contributors it makes it more varied and funnier.

Still got any copies left Algarve? Would be good to see a few next week when I'm over to bring back some memories !

Charlton Life the new Goodbye Horse - yeah, probably is !

Valley McMoist ... thanks for the confirmation, I was sure I remembered it starting at/after Brighton.

Brighton was always my favourite awayday / weekend. I recall once a few of us went on a Friday night, spent the night bar-hopping and ended up in a night club (the Revolution?) and then slept in a beach hut until the rest of the Charlton arrived in the morning. Always great away numbers at the Goldstone !!!

  • 30p!!! less than the face value.

Reminds me of when I ran a joke story that early copies of VOTV were changing hands for £75 each. Had to say that market had collapsed after Rick had people asking him where they could sell their copies.
