I’m honestly really surprised by that. I thought the last place he would go would be where the bloke who keeps him out of the Wales team is. Just goes to show that it’s tough out there for free agents. Great news for us
Will make for a fascinating contest to win the starting spot. Gunter has it at the moment and hasn’t really put a foot wrong but Matthews is more than capable of taking it off of him.
I know Bowyer prefers 3 5 2 Maybe Gunter as a right CB and Matthews as a wingback.
I wouldn’t say it’s Bowyer’s favoured formation, but it’s one he uses. He mentioned Gunter being an option at RCB before and Cawley has said it in the above article, it’s a useful option to have.
The strength of the squad in terms of numbers is so strong. Outside of the obvious striker role, I don’t think I have ever seen a Charlton side with so many strong options / back ups relative to the level they are playing at.
Even the last promotion team from league one..... who were the back ups to the likes of Bielik, Cullen, Aribo?
If we can somehow get a striker in, then there really is no excuse not to go up this year. You just need to look at the other league one squads to realise that minus a BWP or Taylor equivalent, this team has to get out of the league this year.
This is getting ridiculous now. Surely all other 23 teams in the division are looking at our current squad with pure envy. Really pleased to have Matthews back. Got a big tasks trying to get in front of Gunter.
Last season shown we can always go with a back 5 with Matthews & Doughty as full back if Bowyer changes formation at all.
Blimey that is a pleasant surprise. Very strong at RB now in league 1. Good competition. Pleased with this. Let's keep the winning run going tomorrow night.
Matthews, Purrington, Deji and Pearce, a defence that probably started a Championship game together last season is now probably our back up League 1 defence, wow.
Wonder if there'll be the odd occasion where Matthews plays in front of Gunter? Tricky away game perhaps. Great cover to have in any case.
Yes, I was thinking that. In a tight game or trying to close one out. Also if Gunter played on the right side of a back three with Inniss and Famewo, you could have Matthews play as a wing-back with Maatsen on the other side, particularly if Doughty weren't available. Whatever, gives them both cover and options.

LB told you it wasn't going to be a striker.
Great signing for us.
We are turning into a Welsh team, obviously no longer an Irish team.
Great cover to have in any case.

Very decent.

Late but possibly no further into the season in terms of games played than last season.
And as he was training with us until a fortnight ago should be fit.
Very solid signing.
And I still wouldn't be surprised to see a striker come in January.
