  • Good find.

Could do with some captions on the pictures.  Anyone able to identify any of those beauties?
  • Yep, they've got 4002, one of the double-decker unit trains that I remember going on between London and Dartford on the Bexleyheath and Sidcup lines when I was a kid in the 60s.

I believe there were only 2 double-decker units ever built in this country, always joined together to make an 8 car train.

    A couple of short vids:

Anybody else remember travelling on these?

  • I bloody love this forum!

I don't remember travelling on them & amazed it was still running until 1971. I used to live in Burnell Avenue which ran more or less parallel with the line from Welling station to the bridge at Upper Wickham Lane so would occasionally see the train, always fascinated me. Once a trainspotter etc & there was only one team I could possibly support. Bexleyheath & Welling FC  Up the Addicks ::-)
  • They were great fun.

I guess that I would only have been on one to or from Charlton Station and as a schoolkid didn't have to travel at peak times.

I can't say I remember ever getting one back to Charlton, but I can vividly remember being at Charlton Station with my best friend at primary school and waiting for a train towards London, when one of those came along.

That was the thing. You knew they were around but you never knew if you were going to be lucky enough to get on one.

It was like Christmas come early and if you found an empty compartment you could each have your own tier.

Simpler, and in many ways happier, days.
  • Yep , I remember them well. I travelled on them as a kid from mottingham station a few times. No one ever believes me when I talk about them.

    I do.
Used to travel on the double decker to school every day from Westcombe park.
  • And for those who like the finer details.
This is the ensuite shower and toilet on the new sleeper to Scotland. I had the pleasure on sunday
