Eddie Firmani and the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup 1955/1957

First European cup competition to take place was an Inter-Cities Fairs cup tie between Basel select xi v London select xi on 5th June 1955.

This competition would take Three years to finish and the Final match would be played over two legs between Barcelona v London Select xi.

Two Charlton players would play in that first match against Basel and Eddie Firmani became the first every goalscorer in an European cup tie. The other Charlton player to play in this match was Billy Kiernan.

The team was made up of 12 players,4 from Chelsea,2 from Arsenal, 2 from Charlton and one each from Tottenham,West Ham, Fulham and QPR.
The QPR player would come on as sub for the Tottenham player in the first half.

London XI won the match 5-0 which was played in Switzerland.

Other Charlton players who would play for the London XI over the next 3 years in this competition would be Cyril Hammond 26/10/55

John Hewie 4/5/56. Billy Kiernan and Stuart Leary 27/3/57 and Billy Kiernan again in the 2nd leg semi-final 23/10/57.
