Best Male singer of the 70's

Tough call but IMO Robert Plant just edges it from Paul Rodgers

Loved J J Cale, although he wasn’t the greatest singer. The combination of his amazing guitar and jazz / rockabilly sound was sublime.

    What defines "best"?

Who can say if Plant or Rogers were better than Jon Anderson, Barry Manilow, or Gary Glitter?

If it's favourite, then you are correct in your call.

Personally, I preferred Dave Vanian, David Byrne, and John Martyn.

I'm reading the thread title as 'voice'.

If it is purely as a singer, Luicano Pavarotti

If it's limited to popular music then Roy Orbison or Matt Monro (mainly 60s though).

If we are saying "rock" singer then I'd agree he's up there with Rod Stewart and Van Morrison.

James Taylor has the sweetest voice

Too many good ones, but agree that Robert Plant had fantastic range, great subtlety and feel, wonderful sustain, accuracy and a great sense of melody, he committed to the song and has emotional authenticity.
Ultimately it is a matter of personal taste and choice. Unlike many I don't especially (from an earlier era) rate Frank Sinatra for exaample, but see Elvis Presley as close to one of the best ever.

Good list, although I'm surprised you didn't include Freddie Mercury.

Too many different genres going on in the 70s but i’ll go for Marvin Gaye and for something completely different Steve Marriott.
