    From the Official Site

"New signings Luke Varney, Svetoslav Todorov, Paddy McCarthy and Yassin Moutaouakil are expected to be among the squad that kicks off Charlton's pre-season programme against non-League neighbours Welling United on Wednesday night.

Although the sides for both matches will not be fully finalised until the day, Pardew has dropped some hints as to his thoughts.

And all four of his seven new summer recruits listed above, plus returning left-back Chris Powell, are likely to play some part against the Wings.

Also in the squad is expected to be US football genius and player of the year elect Cory Gibbs, who played just 45 minutes for the reserves last season due to a knee injury but is now expected to play every game and captain the first team this term, plus striker Chris Dickson and Denmark U21 international winger Martin Christensen, who both joined the club last March but have yet to make their Addicks debuts.

Across the capital, assistant manager Phil Parkinson looks set take an equally strong side to Tooting, with Iwelumo and Weaver set to feature for the first time in Charlton red.

Other players due to make the trip are Madjid Bougherra, Darren Ambrose, Ben Thatcher, Matt Holland, Dennis Rommedahl, Marcus Bent and Andy Reid, the midfielder having recovered from the hamstring injury that saw a premature end to the previous campaign."

I may have corrected a few omissions made by the Comms Team but that's all :- )
  • anyone going to Welling from Charing Cross here are the times. I'll be getting 18.26 if anyone cares:

    17.17
    17.24
    17.39
    17.46
    18.01
    18.26
18.47 (gets in at 19.20 which will be cutting it fine)

  • With only some of the first team playing we are not going this year.
It is difficult to get to the game on time after work and to be honest I have seen so many preseason games that I already know it will be a complete waste of time and money as the players do not exactly give their all for these kickabouts. Had the game been on a Saturday we definitely would have gone along and regretted it afterwards.
  • I'm going to aim to get the 17.46 i think.....but then may go earlier.

that last one would be cutting it fine, that walk up to the ground takes a bit longer than 10 mins i reckon.

is it quicker to go to bexleyheath then walk down?
  • its about the same from bex heath & welling
  • its the same distance walk from Bexleyheath and Welling Station, about 15 mins for both, though it is easier to jump on a bus down the high street from Welling station.

I understand Rodex's point of view, but to me its like supporting your local school's fete; you sometimes don't really want to go, but you pay your money and pop your head in to support.

Can't really understand why people will go down there just for a drink either and not go in the ground.

    1. you can arrange a meet up for a beer any night of the week,

    2. it will be the first chance to see quite a few new players. After Dowie's poor attempt last year, there will be a much stronger squad this time,

    3. and more importantly for me, Welling are my local non-league side. It always staggers me how just so many tiny clubs in England are run so effeciently and keep their heads above water on such small budgets and with non-professional staff. Its unique to these shores, and is down purely for the love of the game. The money Welling get for the Charlton friendly provides their main income stream for the whole of the season, and i want to help support that.

Exactly. The gate receipts for this game alone allow Welling to more or less survive. I think it's my duty to support this game and my local non league team. Sod giving money to Gillingham or whatever happened with that blanket back in the day.
  • Sorry if you cant really understand it but going to welling for some is a bit of a social event to see those mates from football you havent seen for a few months.

but im sure now after you preaching a few might feel guilty enough to go and buy a ticket before they head to the pub to stay there for the evening. god!!

who's birthday was it last year 1905? had a good drink up. I think dave mehmet tried to get into tavern's car thinking it was a cab... or was he jesting.
  • I like to give my money to CAFC,our tickets for the home preseason game arrived yesterday.Welling are not my local team and an awful lot of the Charlton team are at the other game tonight including Mr Weaver.

And fans who travel to Imperial Fields, Morden (7.30pm) should get the
chance to take a first look at Chris Iwelumo and Nicky Weaver in Charlton
    colours.
Read the full story, including hints on which players will be where, at
    http://www.cafc.co.uk.
  • This year, after perhaps the worst of em all last year, i will be going to the pub, then will make the decision when i leave the pub, if its raining i will stay in the pub for sure, or go home. I would rather keep my tenner than give it to a crappy little non league club from Kent!! (tongue in cheek only in jest winky smiley thingy!)
  • As I only have approx £13 I will be going to the game but normally my enthusiasm runs a bit dry after a couple of beers and want to stay in the juicer.

Not on a school night though
  • the weather is meant to dramatically improve this arvo. its due to be 22 deg and i quote "a lovely summer evening to spend outdoors" whether thats outdoors in the guy pub garden or next door at the san siro, is up to you!
