Gonna say, isn't the Chairman different from the owner?

Not that I'm too bothered who the owner, chairman, player or club is

A Premier league star has confessed he wants to come out as gay, but has been met with worries from his club who are concerned about the reaction of fans.

The footballer has been told he is not to make a public declaration without the blessing of the club and is said to be in talks with bosses who are seeking assurances that the news won't impact his season.

It comes as one Twitter account 'The Gay Footballer', which is said to belong to a player in the Championship, expressed he would be coming out publicly in the next few days.

It is not yet known who either of the players are and sources close to the Premier League player have highlighted the significance of the decision.

An insider said: 'After telling his club, officials have expressed reservations.'

The star player, along with his agent have been in discussions with team officials for several months and the insider said that the club are keen for another player to come out first.

'The club has been supportive but is anxious about a backlash from fans.

'Ideally they want another player to 'come out' first, so they are not the centre of attention.

'The club wants the best for the player and realises he should be celebrated for being so brave and willing to be open about his sexuality.

'But bosses are anxious a public announcement does not consume the club.'

    Very supportive of the club!

Where is that story from? It seems unlikely (to me) that a club would advise a player against coming out because of a potential fan backlash. That would be ridiculously narrow minded and might possibly lead to greater anxiety for the player concerned.

No idea if it's true, but could it perhaps be the Norwich player that @Dazzler21 mentioned on the previous page?

The article is on Twitter, the Mail I think?

I'm confident that, the football club instructing the player to keep quite bit, is 100% BS meself

Well if it is true and they're holding back as they want another player to 'come out' first then they may not have long to wait.

The Mail have completely made that up. How easy is it to just state ‘unnamed premier league club’...’sources...’an insider’ about any subject and just print it. Standard click bait.
100% this. 'A friend', 'a source' or 'an insider' almost always = 'made up'.

If it's true, I think the Premier League club has just managed to land itself one almighty and expensive lawsuit.

I'm no lawyer, but I'd be very surprised if such a decision wasn't contrary to more than one article of the Human Rights Act.  Indeed, I be very disappointed too.

Thinking about it, the club being concerned about the "reaction of fans" might not relate to the fans on the terraces at all, but rather overseas fans who the big PL clubs are desperate to court...

Maybe the money and marketing men are more worried about the reaction in the Middle East and Far East. After all homosexuality is still illegal in many of those countries

Honestly dont think that a Prem club in 2019 would do such a thing, regardless of fan backlash, unless the Club means that it's concerned for the player with regards to fan backlash and wants to seek advice before an announcement

Even tho i still think it’s made up, you’ve only gotta look at the reaction from Middle East/far east based fans when Arsenal tweeted about their support for LGBT, to see what you’re saying would make sense. Some real Medieval views on show.

Even in the fairly westernised countries like the UAE (i.e. Dubai) and Malaysia homosexuality is illegal.

Let's not forget, we are talking about an environment where there a no openly gay footballers. So a club taking that stance shouldn't be surprising. Ignorance personified. It is why it is so important gay players do come out. As football lovers, we all have to accept it is an embarassment to the game that there are no out gay footballers in the top four divisions and this needs to be rectified a.s.a.p.

Has tweeted that he can’t do it. Is not strong enough to go through with it.

As someone who thought this was genuine it is disappointing.
