East Terrace at its peak probably did hold around 40K although the South Terrace (where the Jimmy Seed is now) was pretty large too before they built the Tower Block Charlton House or whatever it's called.
75,031 was an 'official' attendance. Those that were there, sadly no longer with us, strongly maintained there were even more actually present that day.
"Following the stand extension, the police set a new capacity figure in December 1950 of 73,500. This comprised of 26,000 behind the south goal at one shilling and threepence, 32,000 on the East Terrace at one and six, and 12,600 behind the north goal and on the terracing adjacent to the stand at two shillings, plus the 2,900 seats. Subsequently the limit fell to 67,000..."
