Sale of Darren Bent

I can't understand how it makes economic sense to sell DB.
Let's say we sell him to Spurs for 16m of which we will see around 13m after giving Ipswich their cut.
Don't sell him and we're short of that 13m.
Rather than selling our major asset, an asset that will most likely appreciate in value in time, hang on to him and borrow the 13m from the bank.
OK it may cost us around 1m in interest repayments for the year, but that would be chicken feed if Bent fires us straight back up to the Premiership.
If we sell Bent and don't get promotion we could be set for another 27 years in the CCC, which could be devastating for the club.
Keeping him would not only give us a huge psychological advantage but also help us attract players to join us.

  • I'm sorry QA, but i can't see that making any sense at all mate.

We weren't in a brilliant financial state this time 12 months ago, what was going out was matching to great with what was coming in. We then drastically extended this further with our wasted spending spree. We allowed our finances to get out of order on the gamble that we would stay up. The hedge against that was that we had the sale of DB to fall back on. That is what has to happen now.

Part of the DB sale will be to make sure we service mortgage and interest payments on existing loans. As well has having to reduce our wage bill by £16m, we were already holding something of a loss of £10m-£20m. No bank in the land will lend us another £1m, let alone £13m, and even if they did, we would be committing financial suicide.
  • Imagine we held onto Bent for this season to try and get straight back up.

What would happen if this time next year, we missed out on promotion, with Darren Bent suffering from a career threatening injury?

No promotion, no player to fall back on, and the club in serious financial trouble.
  • i don't know if anybody saw it but reg issued a statement to ssn saying all these rumours of dazza joining spurs tomorrow were rubbish and that we've in no way agreed a deal to sell him.
  • I agree with AFKA and Tricky and we seem to have spent more money on transfers pending sales. I wonder if Luke Young will be next? Buying the French Under 21 captain and extending Sankofa's contract point that way.
